Vince Carter might finally get his wish: a ticket out of Toronto.

The Raptors and Trail Blazers are discussing a blockbuster seven-player trade that would send Carter to Portland, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith has learned.

In exchange for Carter, Jalen Rose and two other unnamed players, Toronto would receive forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, center Vladimir Stepania and guard Derek Anderson from Portland. Toronto proposed the multiplayer deal, Smith reports.

Carter asked during the summer to be traded but the Raptors had hoped the All-Star guard would change his mind. Toronto hasn't made the playoffs the past two seasons, and Sam Mitchell will be Carter's third coach in three years.

Carter told the Toronto Star in the offseason that "It's time for the truth: I want to be traded." Carter also said in a letter to fans posted on his Web site that he's not eager to wait while the team rebuilds.

"My frustration comes from the fact that we have not been able to create an equation to win ballgames," Carter wrote. "I am at the point in my career where I do not have time to wait two to four years for a team to mature."

Carter has four years remaining on his contract and remains one of the NBA's most popular players because of his highlight-reel dunks. But knee injuries have caused him to lose some of his explosiveness.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Portland would rape Toronto in that deal.

Shareef's contract is expiring this year, worth $14.6 million, that's a pretty good asset. Undoubtedly this is the best deal the Raps can get right now for Vince, who's playing like absolute sh*t and is the definition of a cancer at this point in his career.

I have heard that they are trying to get NVE in on the deal instead of Anderson. That would free up 30 mil. next year. If they can get that it is not so bad of a deal. I think that is just some wishfull thinking from some Raptors fans.

The Raptors must be really desperate to get rid of Carter for that. Surely they could get a better deal than that. Yes they get cap space, but how many teams have been able to use that space effectively?

LA Clippers lost out on the Kobe-stakes even though they had heaps of room for him (and lost Q-Rich in the process)

Chicago did real nicely when they had cap space, they were able to sign... um..... Eddie Robinson?

Orlando is about the only team I can think of that has been able to make good use of cap space in signing McGrady and being able to trade for Hill.

It's not as if Toronto is a desirable place to play at the moment anyway.. (unlike Orlando when McGrady signed there)

Money talks. Some teams have been able to use their cap windfall effectively, some haven't.

Orlando got two studs, Denver ended up getting KMart and Andre Miller with their cap space, Utah got Boozer and Okur, Suns got Q-rich and Nash ...

I wonder if VC is really making a stink behind closed doors.

Maybe the rox should offer the TE + a 1st for Donyell Marshall if they really want to clean house. Bosh/SAR/Donny is a lil crowded and Donny would be a nice pf/sf combo with Ming.

It might also involve a draft pick going to Toronto...I don't really know why Toronto would pull a deal like that without the absolution they would get something for the future. They must really be desparate to rid themselves of Carter. It is sometimes better to wait til the trade deadline cause usually other teams bend a little more to get their guy. Maybe the Raptors fear Vince might be too injury prone to last that long...i dunno.

But didn't Orlando miss out on some players in that whole scenario?

And then they tried to do it again and failed (they traded all their draft picks for cash to get low and then missed out the next year...)

This whole "free up cap space" thing is garbage! Free agents can get their "Larry Bird" rights from the team who drafted them - so they mostly want a sign and trade anyway. And the better players get sick of carrying the rubbish teams and ask for trades to contenders anyway! Most of the time (see CriscoKidd's post for exceptions) the bad teams free up space and then end up getting burnt for it, year after year (Chicago, Atlanta) - then bad teams who get lucky and sign someone tend to fail anyway because they've got such a bad supporting cast!

It goes both ways. Teams like Chicago and Atlanta get burnt because they completely gut their roster and expect a star free agent to sign with them, which ain't gonna happen. On the other hand, you have teams like Phoenix and Utah who are semi-powerhouses this year and quickly rebuilt after trading away or losing star players (Marbury, Stockton, Malone).

The Suns traded Steph for a bunch of crap and everyone thought they were crazy. Look who's smiling now? They sign Nash and Q in the offseason and are well on their way to 50+ wins. The Jazz get free of Malone and Stockton's contracts, rebuilt around Kirilenko, and now add Boozer and Okur. They're also well on their way to big success. Same goes for the Nuggets who cleared space, and got Andre Miller and Kenyon Martin (although they're not off to the greatest of starts).

It is amazing that Carter's stock has fallen so much that there is a deal being talked about where he would be traded for essentially an "expiring contract (SAR)".

Carter is not the same player he used to be but "name factor" alone (putting butts in seats) he is worth more than an expiring contract.

When I first heard about the fact that Carter might be traded to Portland I was thinking.... Who is he being traded for, Randolph, Ratliff (Toronto needs a center). But then I hear SAR plus scraps? LOL These are ususally the kinds of deals Dallas ususally makes to rape other teams.

If you watched his play lately, you probably would have another opinion. He's really frustrating to watch right now, no denfense, no hustle, no drive, shy away from contact, just jump shot, killing momentum in all winnable games etc. The list goes on and on, sure he's saving himself for the future employer. I was his supporter and defender, but I can't defend a high-paid non-professional whinny scary one. For me, why not SAR, hell, just anyone who wants to take him, just replace him with someone with pride and desire.
