    Tirico gets ESPN show

    Mike Tirico was introduced Monday as the new permanent host of ESPN Radio's afternoon talk show, but ESPN threw a wrinkle into the expected announcement by adding a one-hour daily show to be hosted by Stephen A. Smith.

    Tirico will take over the bulk of Dan Patrick's former time slot, working from noon to 2 p.m. beginning Thursday. Smith will work the 2 to 3 p.m. daily slot.

    In Houston, where ESPN affiliate KFNC (97.5 FM) has been considering a local show from noon to 3 p.m., program director Jon Madani said the station will take a wait-and-see approach on both new hosts.

    I like Stephen A. I know he's loud and opinionated but he tells the truth and he's entertaining.

    I hate him in his NBA gig, but from what little I saw of it, I thought his show was decent.

    If he takes the right approach, I think he could be very good on radio.

    In reality why has corporate ESPN killed ESPN Radio? Now, ESPN Radio is just ESPN TV's b****. It's sad. Why can't they hire hosts that have been on radio previously? Cowherd is an enigma. How did he get hired from a radio station (The Fan in Portland)? (sic) I can imagine the checklist the suits have for hiring radio talent. Item #1: Is the talent on ESPN TV? If the answer is 'yes' proceed to Item #2, if the answer is 'no' end the interview.

    Quoted for truth. When Dan Patrick left ESPN, I no longer had any reason to listen.

    Mike Tirico is consistently unspectacular, and I'd give a parrot a radio show before I'd give one to Steven A. Smith. He might be the most annoying person on television. If Calvin weren't on 97.5, I'd never tune in.

    I've heard his show a few times and I must say, as much as he annoys the hell out of me on TV, his radio show is pretty damn good. It's such a difference from the mundane regularity of most sports radio that his style comes off as much more refreshing than it does on television. Also, i like the fact that's he's willing to take his guests to task, unlike most radio hosts.
