ESPN Poll - Rudy "wearing out his welcome"?

Never underestimate the heart of a team that has lost 14 in a row.

 

Considering the losing streak, the recent problems of Taylor and Francis and the loss of Hakeem, I don't find it all that unusual that Rudy would be mentioned in the list. NOTE - I am not saying any of the above is Rudy's fault.

 

Boy is THAT a Freudian slip or what.

That means the other type of fans are full of "illusion" and enchantment. Illusion like they know what Rudy is dealing with in player competency. Illusion like they know all players are suffering from bad rotations and one-dimensional system rather than being helped by simplicity and confidence building within their own limited capacity to execute complexity. Illusion like they can coach better, or Riley can, or great Xs and Os guys like Pitino can. Illusion like great Xs and Os coaches like Larry Brown, Lenny Wilkins and Doc Rivers coach differently.

The word you are after is "delusional."

And to set the record straight, some of us are not Rudy Apologists, yet don't question him. We never have the illusion we know better. We are actually "disillusioned" from thinking we know how to coach the Rockets.

To me, it is a scout mentality. The scouts don't question coaches, they just read what happens and critique the player capabilities and the execution...including what the opposition is doing to stop the Rockets or exploit the Rockets' defense. Questioning the coach is too much speculation for a scout.

It's like....oooh, can you imagine a scout saying...watch out for those Rockets...what if Rudy does different rotations...what if Rudy does a different system. Those Rockets...they sure can beat you with those "what ifs."

 

ESPN is becoming a second rate internet site. They don't seem to have a good feel for the national sports scene. It is clear to me that somebody in Conn. is in charge of covering the Houston market, and they misreport the true status of our sport's teams repeatedly.

Rudy T. is not even close to "wearing out his welcome" with knowledgable sports fans. He is not above criticism, but he is certainly not to blame for the 14 game skid.

 

I don't see why he's not part of the blame. Injuries are hurting him, but McDyess hasn't played this season, Iverson, McKie, and Snow were hurt, Webber has been injured and so has Grant Hill. I didn't see any of those teams losing 14straight to the like of the bulls, heat and Grizzlies. His system and choice has as much to do with the losing as does the choices made this summer. Other than drafting Griffin, we didn't do anything to improve our lottery status from last yr. Theres enough blame to go around without the injuries and he has his share. I don't want him to quit in the middle of the season, if something is to be done i'd rather it happen after the season.

 

Oh come on now.

Rockets best starting 5.

Francis PG - Out
Mobley SG - Playing hurt
Rice SF - Out
Taylor PF - Out
Cato C - Playing hurt

That is 60% of our lineup OUT, and the other 2 playing in pain.

The Rockets are losing because of injuries, it happened to the Spurs a couple of years ago the year before Duncan came on board.

Let's hope lightning strikes twice in Texas.

It is BS to give Rudy an out because of the injuries. The team was sucking even when Francis, Rice, Cato and Williams were all available.

If Rudy would actually nut up and play Griffin -- at the expense of Kelvin or Willis or KT or Walt, only one of whom is any part of the team's future -- 30+ minutes per game, he would average over 3 blocks a game and everyone would be talking about what a great young defensive player the Rockets have instead of what a bust the Griffin trade / pick was.

 

Rudy's been in Houston for nearly 3 decades.

If he was going to wear out his welcome, he would've done it before now.

But, I do know one day Rudy won't be our coach. No one knows exactly when that day will come.

 

Rudy will leave when he gets his team put back together , gets his rookies more minutes and experience , lets Cato do something other than basketball .Then he will move into his new stadium and wins five more championships. At that point look for him to be vice president of operations. I think you no what team im talking about. GO RUDY ! GO ROCKETS !

 

The Rocks were 2-3 games over 500 before the injuries really set in. They weren't playing well but they were winning. That sentence sounds like the mark of a good coach to me.

So get off Rudy's arse.

Rudy is worth questioning but his day ain't up yet...not this year.

Ala Deirker, if the Rocks are crap 1/3 through the season next year, then he better get his resume in order.

 

whatever. check the stats K -- the Rockets were a red-hot 2-6 in Stevie's last 8 games. That doesn't sound like playing well or winning to me.

 

When Francis and Mobley were both "healthy," they were 5-2. While they didn't look great, they were playing well enough to win, and building chemistry. The only time they were genuinely embarassed was the November 9 loss @Denver, which was the second game of a back-to-back.

Francis was hobbling around during the next 2-5 stretch. which also included a 4-game West Coast trip.

 

I didn't say they were playing well , please re-read the message. My point was that Rudy was coaching well.

Stevie and Cat suffered degredation type injuries that got worse as time went on. Those last 8 games Steve was not 100%.

All that said, the Rocks were over the 500 mark (7-5) and shooting something like 42% FG. The players obviously weren't playing well...so Rudy must have been doing something right in spite of the poor play.

Give credit were credit is due. I don't agree 100% with Rudy but if you simply look at the results within context, they are not bad.
