http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insi...espn.go.com/nba/insider/news/story?id=4845682 By Chris Broussard I don't have full access to the entire article, but this arguement adds on to the debate about the All-Star game which is involving the talk around several players including Yao Ming and T-Mac.... My question is should the All-star game change or should the definition of being called an All-Star change.... A lot of players use this status for contract negotiation and with the contracts of both T-Mac (although he's gone) and Yao coming up, how will this effect them during that process....
Well, these are some of the "intangibles" that come with Yao Ming.. Want to have lots of allstars on your team and get recognized across the world? Get Yao Ming. Price? Lebron James.
IMO the All-star selection should come from the coach, that's coaching the team. He should at least be able to pick or have the final say-so on who's on the team. This would make the game, more competitive and build teams that are built to win. I know the All-Star game is a money maker and publicity maker for the players and the NBA, so I can understand letting the public vote for the starters, but the coaches should have most of the power of who's on the team and who's not.
I think coaches/scouts/GMs should pick the players, and then in the few weeks preceding the all-star game fans at the arenas can select 5 players to start the game. That will never happen, because the NBA wants people to vote on their website, and they believe the fan involvement will keep them more interested in the NBA. It's a business.
China is so pro-Rockets? Is that why Yao Ming's jersey is the number one seller in China? Oh wait, it isn't... That's still KB24... I do agree that Coaches/Players poll would be a nice little add-in. Here's the thing tho, until players like Kobe and LeBron take the game more seriously, who cares? If Kobe and LeBron won't even do the dunk contest, if they don't understand that All-Star weekend is supposed to be symbolic of a whole process where the NBA thanks the fans for their support, then the All-Star game regardless of how it's voted on will be forever a joke. Players honestly do not show appreciation for their fans the way they used to. I feel like this might open up a BASEketballs tirade... Remember when players of the winning team of the All-Star game each got $500? They played at that time for the money AND the love of the game as well as for the adulation of their fans. If Kobe wasn't selected to the All-Star game I think he might actually be happy about it. The system is broken, fixing voting will not do a thing. Fundamentally the NBA needs a change, but as fans we really don't complain. As long as our team is putting up wins we keep things the same. Players with character take a back seat to players with talent. You'll never see a Shane Battier in the all-star game, and truth be told I think he would appreciate being asked to play far more than most of the people who are asked to play.
Well it goes back to the fact of how people want to say "Well he's a 3 or 6 time All-Star".... That statement is so water down now.. Back in the day only selective people had Cell phones... Now everyone has one... Definition of an All-Star in the 21st Century
This is so stupid. When will people realize that the All-Star starters are about who the fans want to see? And yes, China has NBA fans too. The real honor is being voted in by the coaches. If they take fan voting away, fans would be b****ing about how they can't vote. So either way, people will always find a way to complain.
So the guy's argument is that fan voting should now be ended because he doesn't like the fact that the Rockets are supposedly the most popular team in the world now. Why didn't guys like him care when Kobe Bryant was voted to start in the All-Star game when he wasn't even a starter on his own team? Is skewed voting caused by a team's popularity ok as long as he agrees with the result?
All this China scapegoating is unfounded. They're fans just like everyone else and they are entitled to their opinions. I don't think Iverson making it over Joe Johnson, Derrick Rose and Ray Allen (hell, even Iguadala is putting up better numbers) has anything to do with Chinese fans.
once again i think its stupid sure china has the worlds largest population when it comes to just the number of people but the US still has more people who have access to the internet than china. and WHO exactly has china voted in to all-star game? Yao? he deserves it he is the best center in the west and arguably in the NBA Francis? He was playing at an all-star level when he was voted on it would be hard to argue against his selection Tmac? He was an all-star before he came to Houston... Sure he probably made the starting 5 last year and this year without deserving it but there has been plenty of cases where a player who has been injured made the starting 5 (carter comes to mind first) and besides Tmac always some how has all his Haters vote for the 3rd place guy during the last week of voting so he wont start. This is stupid if you ask me the day we see someone like Chase start purely because of online votes then it will be time to change the system (if Chase didnt deserve it of course) I mean NO ONE was complaining when Kobe started in the all-star game when he was still coming off the bench for the Lakers his 2nd year in the league. We should outlaw all Lakers fans vote too!!! The league will always have the final say they will "massage" the numbers to have the players they want to push in the starting 5 always. They had to allow iverson in this year to show that they have some sort of integrity and Iverson at least was playing for the sixers this year AND there are a lot of guards out west that truly deserve to be all-stars over tmac there are less out east.
maybe a combination of fan votes + coach/GM Votes? 33% Fan Vote, 33% GM Vote, 33% Coach vote. Add them all up and who ever is ahead starts.
I definitely think there should be a minimum number of games played. That would prevent what almost happened with T-Mac while still allowing older superstars (like Iverson) to get in if the fans really want to see them. Older superstars past their prime have always gotten in (see Jordan with the Wizards) and I have no problem with that unless they haven't been playing in over half the games.
That's right. He is wrong. China has most internet users. Allthough it is being controlled by goverment..
