Cool. Steve has promise as an actual rotation player this season: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=stein_marc&id=2511802 Andrea Bargnani could not claim to be No. 1, performance-wise, on opening day in the Vegas Summer League. The best player in the gym was Portland's Martell Webster. Bargnani probably wasn't even the best rookie in the gym. Four games into the schedule on the UNLV campus, that status belongs to Houston Rockets rookie Steve Novak.
Another quote from the article, hopefully Steve can be a good rotation guy for this team. It's obviously silly to get too excited or discouraged by anything that happens in the modern summer-league environment, with so much inexperience coming out of the draft and such limited quantities of legit NBA talent and practice time. Remembering all that is especially handy on Day 1.
Wouldn't it be incredibly ironic if he won a starting job or sixth man role? Headline: #32 goes where #8 could not!
Suprise of Day One (to those that don't watch college basketball): LaMarcus Aldridge is soft and doesn't rebound. Congratulations Portland!!
Everything that has come out of Steve's mouth has been confident. Everything that came out Bryce Drew's mouth was FAR from it. Nothing ever came our of Dan Langhi's mouth and Nachbar was as timid as a church mouse. Is Steve Novak going to be a deadeye marksman? Maybe. Does he have that mentality of coming out and looking to bury you with one of his shots? I think so. Bryce shot the 3 because the play called for it. Nachbar had NO IDEA when to shoot the ball. A good comparison is actually to Bullard though having nothing to do with his height actually. Matt knew that his shots were daggers - he took them to hurt the other team. From hearing Steve talk, he may indeed have this same approach. Forget the what if's. What if Rudy Gay is Lebron? What if Rudy Gay is actually gay? Who cares? Rudy gay is not a Rocket on 7/13 so on that day he becomes the enemy. He becomes someone that we try to beat badly. What if Steve is a below par defender? Well, maybe he'll need to compensate for that by dropping 41 on someone. Team defense, low turnovers, smart play and deadly shooting. Have we made the moves to address these needs?
I think he should make the rotation since he gives Van Gundy what he is been talkin bout in big shooting 4
I have a good feeling about novak and that he will be an important player on this team. if he works hard enough i can see van gundy playing him despite being a rookie. i dont believe jvg is opposed to playing rookies, he is opposed to sloppy basketball and generally rookies make a lot of mistakes. if novak plays smart team ball and does not try to do things out of his capabilities i dont see any particular reason why he wouldn't see 10-15 on the floor to help stretch defenses.
Do not take this as any more than a typical fan's complaint ...but ... do we have any depth left at all? How do we recover ... or cover that weakness?
Are those needs being filled = sufficiency to compete for The Prize? Are the moves appropriate to 'the new NBA'? Is there depth requisite to endure an 82 game regular season just to start 'the real season'?
LOL, brutal but true. Team defense- Possibly. We'll have to see how good a defender Shane is. MemphisX seems to think he was a little overrated defensively. Plus, we still need a defensive minded PF and/or C. Any inside news about that? Low turnovers - Hopefully a healthy Yao and TMac will help that out. Smart play - I think so. Shane and Steve were good additions in that department Deadly shooting - If MJ comes and Novak becomes a rotation player, then yes.
Well, Steve Novak was so lethal with his shot, he started to command double teams and triple teams. He only missed two shots, and those shots were desperate heaves to beat the shot clock. He should've had 7-9 had one shot not been taken away because of an inside offensive foul call. Rock on. I'm getting more and more convinced that he could be the steal of this entire draft. Maybe not as talented as others, sure, but three, four years from now, people will wonder how he fell to the 2nd round, just like Michael Redd.
I don't know if I buy into this "new NBA" thing yet. We'll see this season. Miami clearly demonstrated they can win the OLD way ...and I think Houston is potentially better since Yao is clearly better than Shaq and TMac can perform similarly to Wade. If you have the most dominant person on the court, then you can win ...regardless of this "new NBA" stuff. If we have a dominant Yao and TMac, we'll make other teams adjust to us instead of the other way around. If we can win a championship with our MVP Dream plus Chucky Brown starting, then I think we can win this year ...asumming we get MVP play out of Yao and/or TMac.
I am not sure I would go so far as to compare TMac and Wade. Wade is quicker and more durable. If Tmac hit the floor half as many times as Wade did in one game he'd be in a wheelchair.
COOL ... A DocRocket sighting ... wish you posted more, especially in the off-season, when we are all so hungry for information, and especially after we are all in such shock from feeling the Logo hoodwinked us. So, DOC, do you know anything that is going on behind the scenes? Is there anything more to the Swift Gay for Battier trade that hasn't become public? One of the posters here was told by the ticket office that the trade was not final, and that there are other players involved. If so, do you know who? If we get James, do you know what other moves, players or trades we are considering or pursuing? Thanks ... love your insider info!
You do realize Wade falls to the floor on purpose a lot. Some of it is flopping, sometimes it isn't. Wade knows how to fall without hurting himself, similar to AI. Yes, Wade gets hit a lot more than Tracy because he tries to intiate contact a lot more, and he does take his share of hard hits. But it isn't as bad as it seems. I love Wade and dislike the Mavs, but a couple of times in the Finals I threw my hands up in the air when he ended up on the floor. On Novak, let's not get too excited just yet. Summer league is one thing. Preseason is another step. The first few games of the regular season is a further step. Now, if Novak is still shooting well in Jan or Feb, we've got ourselves a player. It often takes time for NBA defenses to figure players out. Novak may have a weakness that will get exploited.
If anything you should be comparing Wade to TMac ...not the other way around. Wade has one good series and now he is king? TMac led the league in scoring two years. Wade hasn't done it once. Wade is quicker, yes but TMac is taller and longer. Wade is more durable, yes. I'll add one more for you. Wade has a championship. ...but he had Shaq and Pat Riley plus a host of veterans surrounding him. TMac hasn't had that type of supporting cast in his career. Maybe this will be his year.
