Class Act, that's why Deke has already become one of my favorite Rockets of all time.

Deke has been working on this for so long. It's wonderful to finally see it come to fruition. Congrats to Dikembe on getting this hospital finally open!

I love Deke...reading stories like this and seeing how he acts upon real things that have happened in his life is very inspiring. not only that, but he seems like such a down-to-earth guy. at t-mac's softball tournament, he was the only semi-big-time athlete to talk to me for more than 5 seconds (JL3 responded to some of my comments as I was yelling from the sidelines). he's such a jolly guy that knows there is so much more to life than just basketball. he actually will look at you and give you the time of day if you get the chance to catch him when he's not busy w/ something (he was sitting on the bench when i asked him some questions).

...BTW, the conversation i had w/ him went something like this:
me: only one more year, man! one more year in the league...make it count, man!
deke (in his cookie monstor voice): ha ha ha...i decide that.
me: woah, really?
deke: ha ha, i play one more year and then we see.
me: what do you think about spanoulis? you know, the greek guy that's coming over?
deke: yeah, he's good. we're going to have a good group this year. i'm very excited.
me: sweet! good luck, man!

not very long, but that's the most anyone at the event gave me all day. in hindsight, i really wish i talked to him about africa or the congo specifically...

Awesome to hear...We've got a great guy on our team.

An academic scholarship from the Congo to Georgetown? Incredible...It's hard enough for international students to be accepted to the top universities, but accepted with a scholarship...awesome.

Deke is the man, IMO that would be crazy if once he retires from bball he can work there as a doctor.

Its pretty crappy how much other nba players donate. Like giving 10k for hurricane Katrina when they make like 10 million. Thats like a ten thousandth of a 1 percent of their annual salary.

Several years ago I read an article where a writter was giving oun 'non-traditional' awards. He named Deke as 'the smartest' athlete. Appers the writter had been in a room where everybody was asking questions of Deke at the podium. Each reporter stood, stated their name and paper, then asked their question. On reporter wited till everybody else was done and some started to leave. In halting english, he identified himself as being with the Economist and asked Deke something to the effect of to what extent did he think the war in the Congo would have long term on the local economey. (Just take a minute to visualize someone asking such a question to Steve Francis, JL3, Battier, Barkley, Rudy Gay, etc). Deke not only answered, but asked the reporter if he would be more comfortable getting the answer in French or some other language as he was obviously not comfortable in English.

The reporter giving the 'award' said he did not know if Deke wa smart, but how may players could field a question like that much less in a variety of languages.

Now I find out he came to the US on a non-athletic scholarship. And expects to be a doctor! I am blown away.

O,O 15 Million??? Thats more than 7 times more than what he makes this year (discounting the salary he made in his former years) but that still a LOT of money.
