Mavs deal 22nd pick to Portland for three picks. Not a big splash but Mavs may be looking to stockpile picks to include with Stackhouse to get a deal done.... http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4284712
That's what I was thinking. Portland has been the one stockpiling picks and getting all these youngsters within the last couple of years. But this may be an attempt to get a veteran player for the pick and maybe a Outlaw, Rodriguez or Batum.
I don't see how getting the 56th pick (and moving back 2 slots) helps them do anything in a draft short on talent. $3M cash is a lot more attractive in a trade than a completely useless pick.
I think that they are not really sold on whoever they are looking at, or they think they can get comparable value at two spots lower. They may not be looking to draft anyone, it may be to package the extra picks along with a vet or expired contract for something of value. $3M cash is a lot more attractive to almost all teams, but Mark Cuban is willing to throw in the max cash considerations plus these draft fillers for someone he covets.
hmm i guess the blazers are really intent on getting that casspiri (sp?) guy, 56th is nothing but i guess the mavs save money too somehow in this? i dont know if it was a high 2nd round pick I can see why but a 2nd round at the end of the draft makes me scratch my head
Im not sure if this trade has to do anything to do with a trade or anything, but reportedly Portland is targeting Kirk Hinrich.
Good trade for both parties. The Mavericks pick up a late second rounder, enabling them to take a flier on a foreign player and stash him overseas, all the while retaining his rights. They will probably also be able to do the same with the second rounder in 2010. Meanwhile, they only move back two spots in a draft they obviously don't think has a clear "Top 22-23" players. The Blazers gave up the FOURTH of their four second rounders in THIS draft alone (man, Kevin Pritchard has stockpiled some picks through various trades!) and what will undoubtedly be a late second rounder next year (which they won't even need, given the quantity of good young players already on the team) in order to jump Sacramento and get the guy they want in Omri Casspi (who, by the way, would become the first Israeli ever drafted in the FIRST round). The Blazers will still have the #22 pick, two other EARLY second rounders and a late second rounder in this year's draft. They could definitely afford to give up 3 picks here.
You're also forgetting the possibility of Portland packaging a few of those picks (maybe the team they're trading with really wants Casspi, and this is Portland's way of sweetening that deal) and dealing for an established veteran. A few people in this thread have mentioned Kirk Hinrich as that guard, and I can definitely see that happening. For Dallas, it makes sense because they can now package together a few picks themselves along with Stack's contract, and probably make a deal for someone like Vince Carter, and hope that the picks plus the monetary savings will be attractive enough to get a deal done. They can also stow away a player if something doesn't come along in way of a trade.
Portland dealing for no reason in particular. Yep, its draft time. Dallas moves down and gains what amounts to a 2nd round Brad Newley type pick. *yawn* But good teams dont take any picks for granted.
I think the Blazers thought they had too many picks and wanted to ditch some. There's really no other reason to do a trade like that before the draft. On draft night? Maybe, if there's a player you want at 22 that you don't think will last to 24. But there's no way to tell if that situation will arise the day before the draft. I mean, if it's like the article says and they want to leapfrog the Kings to take Casspi, then what happens if he goes before then? That's a trade you pull the trigger on/announce at the last minute.
Doubtful, the Mavs traded down for only an extra second round pick. The third pick is a 2010 second round pick. Prior to this trade the Mavs did not have a 2nd pick in this draft.
Agreed. The glut of picks is why Portland did the trade today. Even if the Blazers took nothing but foreign players with their four second rounders and stashed them all overseas, the organization would still need to continually moniter and scout those guys. Why bother? As for Dallas, I seriously doubt this trade was about "stockpiling" picks to trade up or as sweetener. Other teams don't give a crap about late second rounders (#56 this year and what will likely be in the mid- to late 50s next year) as far as it comes to "sweetening the pot" in a major trade. This was likely more about getting two picks in which the Mavericks could invest in foreign players and let them develop overseas. Remember, both Ginobili and Scola were late second rounders.
Draft time =Blazer time. I expect the Blazers to package picks to move up. They would also buy 2nd round picks as they usually do.
