Garciaparra agrees to one-year deal with Dodgers
    ESPN.com news services

The Los Angeles Dodgers are slowly becoming the West Coast version of the Red Sox after Nomar Garciaparra agreed in principle to an incentive-laden one-year deal, ESPN's Peter Gammons confirmed.

Garciaparra, who still needs to take a physical and finalize contract details, will likely play first base for the Dodgers. The deal has a base salary of $6 million and could be worth as much as $8 million, the New York Post reported.

The Yankees, Astros and Indians were originally interested in Garciaparra but were told by Garciaparra's agent, Arn Tellum, of his choice to join the Dodgers.

Garciaparra played under recently hired Dodgers manager Grady Little in 2002-03 with the Boston Red Sox and was teammates with pitcher Derek Lowe and third baseman Bill Mueller in Boston. Lowe signed with Los Angeles last winter, and Mueller joined the Dodgers this week.

Garciaparra was considered one of baseball's best shortstops for several years while playing with the Red Sox, but his playing time was limited the past two seasons because of injuries. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs midway through the 2004 season.

A five-time All-Star with the Red Sox, Garciaparra hit .283 with nine homers and 30 RBI in 62 games for the Chicago Cubs last season, when he earned $8.25 million. He tore his left groin running out of the batter's box in St. Louis on April 20 and didn't return until Aug. 5.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

So would you bat Rondell White ahead of Lane or after him?

Landing Pettite and Clemens used up a lot of karma. Years' worth.

"With Garciaparra off the free agent market, the options are slim for the Orioles and Astros. Both have vacancies they hoped to fill via free agency. The Astros will likely settle for Rondell White or Juan Encarnacion for their outfield. A signing would illustrate a lack of confidence in Jeff Bagwell's ability to play first base on a regular basis. A retirement would be a classy move by Bagwell that would save the team $17MM. Obviously he's entitled to the full terms of his contract, but maybe the team can convince him to retire with a $10MM buyout. The Astros are already on the hook for Bagwell's $7MM buyout for 2008."

Can somebody tell me what is wrong with White? Yeah he's injury prone but the guy is a consistent .800+ ops batter.

I'm not going to say it, but I know the topic is out there... and its one that has been hotly debated since this club got rid of Derek Bell.

I'm not sure if this is what you're implying, but I don't think anyone has a problem with the fact that he is black. Though my comment was tongue in cheek, White would be a welcome addition and I don't think it was at all realistic for anyone to expect that this team would add a marquee name. I guess some had hoped that the momentum from a world series appearance would carry over into a big addition, not to mention the loss of Clemens making this team already worse to begin with. However, Drayton is perfectly justified in NOT upgrading this offense. He would be WRONG, but justified because we did go to the world series.

Not really a surprise - were we ever really a serious contender for his signature?

    This sucks.....

One would think that we are in the midst of a big trade. Thats all I can really hope for at this point...

    Rondell White?
    Juan Encarnacion?

eh..... Neither of those signings really brings much to the table.

They would both be upgrades to what we would throw out into LF if Bagwell can't go. Not every move is a blockbuster. Adding White or Encarnacion along with another starter and this team will contend for the playoffs once again. Hell, knowing this team, they probably will regardless of whether or not they add anyone else.

I'm glad we made a run for Nomar. He ended up picking Los Angeles for personal reasons, it sounds like. Nothing we can to about that unless we all wanted Drayton to overpay for his services. Then, he'd be the first one to be b****ed at for signing Nomar for too much if it didn't pan out perfectly (See Bagwell, Jeff and Hidalgo, Richard).

I'm not saying you, or anybody else here in particular, is against his signing... I just think its a big-time problem overall in baseball, that black players (unless they're Dontrelle Willis or Barry Bonds) often get overlooked.

Guys like White, Derek Lee (who was a MVP candidate that finally got some recognition because he went to the Cubs), Jimmy Rollins, Garrett Anderson all deserve far more praise than they're getting from the media.

Everybody jumps all over the place when Nomar's name comes up, but with White (a guy you can justify as being a more valuable addition), its looked at as sloppy seconds.

I've been waiting for a comment like that! A few tweaks here and there works if the moves are right. Look at the Yankees? Star power all around, but they can't play together. You can't have too many egos out there. Getting an upgraded bat would be great for the Astros even if the name doesn't ring as much of a bell.

let's be honest....it took a miracle to turn it around and get there. i'm glad they did but it was all pitching and decent offense. when we got into the world series it was obvious we just didn't have enough offense to win it. that's all we need for this team, it can't be that difficult to add another power bat to the lineup. teams do it all the time, why can't we?

I can't believe how many of you really wanted Nomar. He's really not worth that much...especially since he can't even play SS anymore.

I'd bet a lot that Nomar won't play over 100 games next year...and if he does he'll hit something like 20 homers and 80 RBI's. For an outfielder making that much money that is not worth it. Jason Lane will put up better power numbers than him.
