    What a guy.

No link (for now) as it was just on Sportscenter. The Nets have declined to give him a max extension he asked for, and so he's asking for a trade.

Kidd resigns, and your team brings in Mourning and you're still complaining?

Well this is just selfish. How can this guy (and his agent) even be so stoopid to think he will get anywhere near max.

He was the reason JKidd stayed to keep the team together. Maybe everybody got the Kidd and Scott things wrong; maybe the problem was Martin all along.

    Selfish prick. :)

Martin seeking six-year, $87 million deal
    ESPN.com news services

Kenyon Martin once wanted a contract extension from the New Jersey Nets.

    Now he just wants out.

Martin has broken off contract talks with the Nets and has asked for a trade, reports ESPN.com's David Aldridge.

Martin, who has one year remaining on his Nets contract, reportedly was seeking a six-year extension worth approximately $87 million, but Aldridge reports the Nets have offered him roughly $66 million.

Martin is not eligible for a new contract until July 2004. He is scheduled to make $5.1 million this season.

Martin produced the best numbers of his three-year career last season, averaging 16.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He increased his averages to 18.9 points and 9.4 rebounds during the playoffs when the Nets reached the NBA Finals for a second consecutive season.

Western Conference power forwards would eat his lunch. They would have to shift him to power small forward.

I'm not surprised at this at all. I've never liked the guy, and he's always been a jerk. Dude's not even a top 7 PF and he wants the max. Ridiculous.

I think he is a selfish guy. I remember that TD offered him a hand when he felt down in a play-off game and he push TD's hand off.

Also wasn't he who blame his team mate for the lost against the Laker but not mentioning his fault in their lost against the Spur.

What an a$$hole. The guy is *maybe* as valuable as a Shareef Abdur Rahim, but he wants MAX money? Maybe pay him $7-8 mil per season, but what he wants is out of hand. Let him go, NJ.

that's a shame for new jersey. losing kenyon martin will hurt that team, but he isn't worth a max contract. not by a long shot.

you guys need to learn when to not to act like basketball scouts and rampantly criticize a player. Kenyon Martin is a stud, he could hang in any conference. the guy is not just an intimidator who stikes fear in opponents hearts but is an initmidator with talent. Read the papers man - during the finals, Duncan praised Kenyon Martin like Kenyon was his daddy; the dude is a young charles oakley with better offensive potential and hell of lot more atheletic abilitiy. go back to scouting the puerto rican national team dude cause you dont know what your talking about willis.

No doubt he's a good player...decent offensively, and very good defensively. He also plays w/ an intense passion that coaches and teammates love (although he may rub opposing players the wrong way). He's not a top tier power forward though...a couple notches below Duncan, Garnett, Webber, etc. A 6 yr, $66 million contract sounds fair for a good player w/ promise, who averaged 16 and 8 in the Leastern Conference.

i remember that. and i remember the comentators praising kenyon and kevin willis scolding tim duncan for extending his hand. its just some old school american sport thing. apparently you must hate your opponent or something. i'm sorry if this offends anyone but i think its funny as hell, and a little stupid.
    its - just - a - game.

Hey, this kind of stuff happens when a player gets overhyped. I'd love to see Martin's stats if Kidd went down with an injury for a while.

He's a scrappy undersized PF who benefits from playing with a great PG. That is all. I'd be a fan, since that is the way I'd like to play bball if I could, but his ego is just too huge.

Martin does have a lot of Barkley in him...especially the outspoken aspect. And he's emotional and wears his heart on his sleeve. IMO, the "max me or trade me" is just posturing in the press to up the offer from NJ.

For me, it's hard to get a gauge on how Martin would do in the WC but at least two things are worth noting.

    1) Going against (arguably) the best player on the planet for 6 Finals games, he pretty much held is own in 4 of the 6 games. Duncan got the better of it...no doubt. But something that gets obscured is the fact that the Nets 3 point shooting made the 02-03 Rockets look like a team of Glen Rice's in his prime.

    Here's the 3pt game by game - 30.8%, 36.4%, 30.8%, 11.1%, 25.0%, and 28.6%. Not exactly the type of shooting which spreads the D.

    2) Elton Brand walks on water on this BBS. Brand's numbers against Duncan are no better than Martin's. Maybe even not as good. Yea, yea, yea...I know...it's the Clipps. But for a good portion of the championship series, Kittles, Harris, Jefferson and occassionally Kidd were doing a very good Clippers imitation.

Do I think Martin's worth the max? No. Do I think he's worth more than $11m/year? Yes. IMHO, if Alonzo Mourning can play healthy for the whole season, it will take a lot of pressure of Kenyon Martin and his numbers will go up.

Martin is a good player and I think people undervalue him. That said, he is NOT a max player. Come back to me when he averages a double/double and can put the team on his back to win games. Right now a lot of his points come in transitions and put backs. It is his "hustle" that gets him points. He still has a long way to go in polished post moves and consistant double digit rebounding each night.

He is worth the 6 year 66 million dollar contract the Nets are offering him. But NO WAY is he worth a Max contract.

Would anyone pay him a max contract on the open market? Doubtful.

Like I said, if he starts to average around 20/10 each night next year (Jermain Oneal numbers) and is able to win games by putting the team on his back then he can justify a max contract.

Pretty stupid to me.....I WANT A TRADE! Bad bad bad for Nets. Well they do have Alonzo Mourning along with Mutombo and Collins and Rogers now.

    He has some trade value...
