This was interesting. From ESPN Insider today.

Rockets: The team is targeting Oct. 14th as the date Yao Ming will be released from his China national team duties, a Rockets source told Insider. That's smack dab in the middle of the Rockets preseason schedule. To make up for his training camp and preseason absence, the Rockets are already planning on having a presence at every city Yao plays in conjunction with the World Championships.

I think it is smart that they will be in contact with Yao Ming heavily during the World Championships to try to get him a jump start on the things he will miss at training camp. It is still no substitution for him not being there but at least it is something!

and considering how much of a "gym rat" he is, whatcha want to bet Yao will gladly hang out after Nat Team practices to work with the Rox ppl? Maybe he will not be as unprepared as we expected by the time he gets here in Oct...

Having someone at the World Championships is a great idea. Its the best thing to having him in camp and when he gets there at least he'll have a couple of weeks and a couple preaseason games to help him out. And at the beginning of the season, the Rocks have a decent amount of off days so Rudy and the gang should have a little more time to work w/ him.

I don't expect him to play the preseaosn, or the first 5 games of the season, or more than 20 minutes up until 20 games into the season.

The guy needs a real break. If we overwork him, he might get s serious injury, and we'll really regret it.

Hopefully Asst. Coach Mr. Mean will be one of those assigned to follow him around/tutor him on this NTL team tour. That would definitely help Yao get ready.

Now we can check off "will miss beginning of training camp and not know the team." from the Yao Ming hater list. :D
