In the ESPN chat today, Fred Carter said that Yao may go down as one of the top 3-4 centers to play. It went from everyone saying that Yao was a flop to Yao becoming one of the best ever? I'm a huge Yao fan, but I wonder if the expectations are getting too high for the kid.

<<Blue (Honolulu): My man Fred "Insane Canine" Carter, Yao isn't afraid to take the big shots at the end of games, and cooly knocks down FT's too. Could he be that rarest of creatures, a franchise center u can leave in at the end of close games?

Fred Carter: You are right. He can be the rarest of creatures, having the skills he has. This is his first year and we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg. He may go down as one of the top 3-4 centers to play the game. >>

During yesterday's pre-game, one of the Raptors' asst. coaches said that Yao compares with Mikan, Jabbar, and Wilt, and the Raps announcer said that he feels that Yao will develop into a Kareem Abdul Jabbar type....this is all brain candy.

At least Yao's unpublished biography initially was "the Chinese Shawn Bradley."

What was the title heyp?? Was it "the next Kareem?"

"Ralph Sampson: The Center for the 80's"

as in measuring him as new greatness in the age of revolutionary new greatness under Magic and Bird.

published in 1984, his 1st year.

    sigh

"He may go down as one of the greatest" is not the same as "he is one of the greatest". All these guys are saying, IMHO, is that Yao has shown a lot of potential and if he continues to improve (as I think there is reason to believe he will), he COULD be one of the truly great ones someday.

    What's the big deal?

Reality check, reality check. Yao's yet to have a 20/10 season. He's not yet a top center right now never mind all-time. This kind of hype is ridiculous. I hope it won't get into Yao's head.

It could really well happen. Right now Yao would focus on improving his game, so far he's showing he's learning hard and improving.

All those praises would not go to Yao's head, he's really even headed player, he does not get too up or too down emotional when something good or bad happens.

I hope this doesn't go to Yao's head. The media jocks Yao whens hes doing good but when Yao does bad, they will stomp all over again. Yao has to remember that.

The hype that I am worried about is that of Sega 2k4 - where Yao is depitched as a Monster 'Baller. NBA Live 2004 will even be worse - with Yao literarily eating up his opponents after every game.

Yao has a lot of potential to get much better and he is not the type of player to let things go to his head and is showing that he willing to work hard to improve. He still is a rookie and there is no way to project how successful he will become. It took years for Hakeem to become a true superstar,Yao has a long way to go to becoming a superstar.

I heard Ray Allen being interviewed on one of the radio shows and he was asked to predict Yao's PPG in a few years. He said 24ppg...

It's nice to see him getting compared to the greats. Just imagine once he gets the hook shot down 20 point games will be the norm just like Jabbar.

They say you can't rush greatness and Yao is exactly that.

Yao is a realist and there is no person on this planet has more patience to become a great player than himself.

Despite not having a full month of rest since he was 15 year old, despite all the pressures and scrutinies, he has shown no sign of mental break down, his body has been held up incredibly well and the rate of his learning and development has been amazing.

There is no doubt in my mind that this guy is going to become one of the NBA greats.
