On January 5th's show they had a great debate on if Tebow's religious beliefs play a part in the resentment of him, and it was a brilliant discussion. I'm in search of a video of this, I can't find it anywhere. The First Take homepage has a video from 1/4/11 titled "Resentment of Tebow" but that is not the same one. Move this to the Hangout if need be.
Err, so what exactly is this thread about? Could it not have gone in the long-standing Tebow thread we've got going? Are you just asking for someone to help you find the video? Are you looking to discuss him as a public/religious figure? If so, here's why I imagine a lot of people have a problem with him.
except he doesn't do either of those things - ask god for touchdowns or belittle suffering. you ever actually read/hear anything tebow talks about (other than his standard 5 second "thank you jesus" he uses anytime he speaks)? he always talks about how football is secondary and that he's thankful to be able to play in the NFL so he can use it as a platform to impact people and build momentum for people to start caring about the less fortunate (i.e. spreading the word about the hospital he's building in the philippines, spending time with the ill, etc.). so no, that gif doesn't really explain the tebow resentment. people have every right to hate the guy, but just be honest about why you hate him (ie the way he throws or the way he's outspoken about his beliefs), but don't make up negative attributes. i watch this kid's postgame press conferences and every single time he manages to make me feel like scum for not being as good a person as he genuinely is. http://www.nfl.com/videos/denver-broncos/09000d5d825d57f1/Tim-Tebow-postgame-press-conference
So you honestly think he does not pray about football, either in request or in thanks? Gonna have to say that's pretty naive.
i didn't say that at all. just pointing out that i haven't personally heard him pray for touchdowns, and i'm fairly certain you have never heard him say anything to that effect either. he obviously prays and thanks god for being able to play football, because i've heard all those things come out of his mouth. but to make the leap from 'he prays' to 'he asks for touchdowns'? no i wouldn't make that leap. if you think that's naive then okay. i wasn't trying to earn your approval, but i think it's clear who's winning in the logic department here.
not trying to pick a fight but let's be honest. you would be absolutely right as far as people resenting tebow because he 'prays for touchdowns' or just generally perpetuates the notion that the reason he wins is because he's christian or it was god's will or something, except for the simple fact that he's never actually done that. he thanks his god and that's the extent of his religious speech in the football arena. i just don't see why the act of him thanking his god (albeit very publicly) is sufficient reason to hate the guy.
