Ex-NBA player Mercer allegedly involved in strip club fight
    Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Former NBA player Ron Mercer surrendered to police on Wednesday to face a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from a scuffle in a strip club in April, police said.

Mercer, 31, is a Nashville native who was waived by the New Jersey Nets in 2005 after missing more than 60 games due to injury.

Police said Mercer's friend, 34-year-old Robert Edward Johnson, was also charged with felony aggravated assault for stabbing a bouncer at the club in the same incident.

The pair got into a verbal argument with a dancer at Anthony's Show Place on April 21 and were asked to leave by the security guard, Keith Battle.

A fight broke out among the three men and Johnson admitted to police that he stabbed the bouncer in the right side and shoulder with a knife. Battle was not seriously hurt.

Another bouncer, William Beels Jr., was punched in the face by Mercer, police said.

Mercer was released on $1,500 bond and Johnson was released on $5,000 bond. Both were scheduled to appear in court Aug. 13, records show.

Neither man could be reached for comment on Wednesday night. No listed number for Mercer or Johnson could be found in the Nashville area, where both men live. It was not immediately known if they had retained attorneys.

Mercer was an All-American and all-Southeastern Conference player at Kentucky, where he was a freshman on the 1996 NCAA championship team.

After being the sixth overall pick in the 1997 draft by the Boston Celtics, he was traded around the league before being hampered by injuries and cut by the Nets.

What a shame. Ron Mercer was once a decent NBA player.

incidents happen at strip clubs ALL THE TIME regardless of your status. it's not really that surprising. just b/c you're an athlete doesn't mean you can't enjoy naked women.

I am neither proud nor ashamed to say that I have spent a LOT of time and money at strip clubs. And I have NEVER gotten into a fight. I've seen a couple of guys get sh1tty - and once, I was waiting outside for a girl and some dude had a gun, but that was a domestic thing - he was dating one of the dancers, and thought some other dude was moving in on her. but I have NEVER seen a fight.

And I didn't hang out at really nice places, either, I'm talking places like Caligula XXI.

You know, I get tired of hearing and reading comments like this.

For every one athlete that is involved in incidents like this, there are 100 athletes that have not and will not ever be involved in something like this. It's like this is a overreaction period. Then, ESPN and the mainstream media blow news like this out of proportion.

The athletes have to be aware that the media and the mainstream audience thinks they are thugs now and try to stay away from trouble like this. It is sad really, but it is reality.

I totally agree. what is there to fight about in a damn strip club. its the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. either you have the money to pay the girl or you don't. its the pretty much based on the world's oldest profession. if you don't have the money you can still look. wtf are you fighting about?

ok, there was a bit of hyperbole on my part. i'm just not surprised when incidents happen at "clubs" in general.
