When I voted (for Yao), it was only 20% Yao and 80% Dwight. Almost 6,000 people voted.

Is the national perception really this lopsided towards Dwight? I think one of the main reasons is the whole exposure factor Dwight got from the "Super Man" dunk and his athleticism. He's more "fun" to watch because he dunks more and blocks more.

yao is a better offensive player; dwight is the better defender/rebounder/shot blocker. both are good in their own right. both are not complete players like the 90s centers.

the perception of yao is not that good around the L. all you see is him getting dunked on, blocked... it's unfair but it is what it is. he IS the best center in the L b/c we can actually go to him for buckets.

most of dwight's shots are created by his teammates' penetration. his post game remains pretty much the same as years before.

Yao had 32 points in a double digit victory where he was the leading score by far.

Sportscenter decided to show one highlight, where some d-bag dunked over him.

    Nice one ESPN.

I think the main reasons are he's putting up better numbers and he's the undisputed best player on his team.

And there's a stigma attached to being very large and very slow, no matter how productive the player is.

Its really hard to say which is better, since they have a totally different type of game. One big thing Yao has over most centers, is he is almost automatic from the FT line, which is a great thing for a center. I'd say Yao is slightly better, but I'm a little biased :)

If more athleticism and more fun to watch are the factors that decide who's the best center in the league,Okay, just strike that and I don't give a damn who wins the vote.

Yao's a big influence on the team, his presence on the floor affects the game result most of time. I don't get it why so many people follow the entertainment path to judge who's best center.

Howard can't post up sometimes, and he just followed up the misses his teammates did and dunked 'em home.Meanwhile his freethrow sucks,no matter how strong he is,he HAS to go to the line and shoot the ft.THAT ALTERS THE GAME RESULT IF THE GAME IS ON THE LINE AND HE CAN'T EVEN MAKE 'EM AND SAVE THE TEAM?

So who's the best center?Ask BSPN and define 'best'.

I have zero problem with people continuing to rate Howard above Yao. It gives Yao fuel for the match-ups and has clearly worked to motivate him into owning the Magic every time he plays them. Howard has the athleticism and strength that lets him put up big numbers against smaller, weaker centers on other teams. Everytime he comes up against Yao though, his production drops. Yao clearly owns that match-up.

I also don't think there are really that many people who would seriously rather have Howard in a 7 game series. The game slows down, defenses tighten up, and free-throw shooting (a weakness of Howard's) becomes that much more critical. I'll take Yao every time, thank you.

And this is why the country believes Dwight is the better center. That, and Dwight has really done a good job of showing his lighter side for the cameras so fans can identify him more. Yao has a great personality, but it seems like he really reserves it for people who know him personally.

Yup. It was because Yao never dunks. He gets a ton of point blank shots and uses his baby hook to convert them. Had they been powerful dunks, they would've been showed in the highlights. Truly disgraceful.

Yao only plays like the best center only at 20% of the time even though he got everything to be the best center.

Dwight does not possess the skills but he plays at his 100% and looks like the best center 80% of the time. Besides, running, jumping, stamina, spirit are the real fundamentals to any athlete. Dwight got them all and be the best.

    Dwight over Yao, that's right.

depends on matchups. if we play utah, i think everyone would prefer dwight.

but if we play the lakers, you have to take yao.

but at the end of the day, yao can get you buckets by himself. dwight can't.

    Dwight is a better athlete.
Yao Ming is the better Center.

By the way, it's no surprise to me that most of the country think Dwight is better. Look at how the Media is working overtime to portray Yao Ming negatively ie showing Yao get dunked on..when he scored 32points that night.

What else is the average fan supposed to think?

Of course in your mind, you're going to think Dwight is better because you see him dunking with a cape...

So I take it you watch every Magic game? I'll go with JVG on this one, at the end of a game you can run your offense thru Yao. Dwight, no so much. Ultimately it's really about perception. ESPN and every media outlet will hype up Dwight because of his highlight dunks and blocks where Yao highlights consist of him getting dunked on or blocked by a smaller defender.

just look at the NBA Dish. The national perception of ranking players is going to be driven by their value in fantansy leagues and video games. Too many kids playing games and voting on the internet for bball reason to matter, or even really exist.

Head to head it's certainly no contest. Yao kicks Dwight's ass every single time.

But Howard is a highlight machine, and that drives ESPN and so forth.

So far this Year Yao 1 - Howard 0

I copied this from the post game report on Yahoo!!

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—Dwight Howard might be regarded as the best center in the NBA by the end of this season, but Yao Ming let him know that debate still has a ways to go before it’s settled.

Yao, Houston’s 7-foot-6 All-Star, outplayed Howard in nearly every phase Saturday night, scoring 22 points and taking down 13 rebounds while carrying a tired Houston Rocket team to a 100-95 victory over Howard and the Orlando Magic.
