He doesn't look that r****ded. It didn't even say in the article the Lakers offered Kobe to him for Dirk.

Actually, game seven proved Cuban's point.

Yeah, Kobe is better than Dirk. However, let's not forget that Kobe plays with Gasol, Artest, Bynum and Odom...4 guys who could easily be the best players on a bad team. Not a bad supporting cast.

But yeah, Kobe>>>>anyone in the NBA right now.

We should have gone all out at that point for Kobe. I remember we were one of the teams being swirled around. Its a shame we stayed with Tracy.

I think the OP's point was that Kobe has won 2 championships and been to 3 finals since that article and Dirk has been bounced out of the first round each time

During that time, Tmac for Kobe was relevant and might have happened and that's many times worse than this trade.

I don't think Kobe ever had the Rockets on his wishlist though.

    say what ?

Dirk's supporting cast of Nash, J Howard, J Terry, Jamison, etc. was comparable to any NBA title contender. what was missing was a coach who can guide them over the hump, someone like PhilJax. But Cuban refused to meet Phil's salary demand.

Jason Terry never played in Dallas with Nash or Jamison. Josh Howard was a little used rookie when Nash and Jamison were there.

If Artest, Bynum, or Odom is a teams best player then that team is in serious trouble.

In Cuban's defense, it's a pretty easy argument to make that Dirk was as likely, if not more likely, to get the Mavs a championship than Kobe.

No doubt Kobe is a better player, but the Mavs are pretty much built around Dirk and as he goes, they go. To throw that away and hope Kobe alone could make them a title contender would be a hard decision to make.

There's only a handful of "untouchable" players in the league, and Dirk is one of them. I just don't think anything short of a totally lopsided trade could pry him away from Dallas, much like us with Yao before he became Doctor Scholl's best customer.

Yeah, I don't care what Cuban's argument was. If the Lakers offered you Bryant for Dirk, you make that trade. Cuban just likes to stir the media pot.

I would have taken Dirk over Kobe. Look at that squad and what Dirk brings to the table. He fits with that team. Kobe, even if he was available would have to come into a system and find his niche all over again.

It's hard to trade a guy that just won the MVP trophy and led your team to 67 wins and also led the team to the finals the year before that. Up to that point Dirk had done much more as a number one option on a team than Kobe had. If not for some very questionable officiating Dirk might have even had a ring at that point. I probably still would've taken Kobe but Cuban doesn't look like an idiot for turning down a player that was ready to jump ship when things weren't going right for a player of Dirk's caliber.
