Yao sorry to see Tomjanovich go

    Associated Press
HOUSTON -- Responding from half a world away, Yao Ming says he was sorry "legendary coach'' Rudy Tomjanovich announced his resignation as the Rockets' coach last week.

Yao, who is back home in Shanghai, China, issued a statement through Team Yao marketing representative Bill Sanders on Tuesday, television station KRIV reported.

"Rudy has accomplished a great deal during his years with the Rockets, and I feel fortunate to have had the time with him during my rookie season,'' Yao said.

Yao added that he considers Tomjanovich a "mentor, a role model and a friend.''

Tomjanovich, 54, stepped down Friday, citing his fight against bladder cancer and his desire to resume a more normal lifestyle after 12 seasons as Houston's coach.

I bet you Yao has a lot of reservation about Rox bball style. He would probably be better off having new coach instead of thinking leaving in two years.

    indeed.

new coach's #1 priority should be palling it up with Yao

dammit, Yao is a classless punk he should of said.. "as far as myself.. I need to sit down with coach and make some personal decisions for me, myself, and I...I'll leave it at that" : D

i think yao's just sad that he lost his protector. when rudy was here, he could play soft all he wanted to and not worry about getting taken out. then when mr. mean came on board, when he played soft he lost minutes to the more aggressive cato. obviously, he's just sad he'll have to work hard the whole game now and isn't at all concerned about losing a friend in rudy, the only coach he's had.

plus, it sort of sounds like he wanted rudy to stay, meaning he disagrees with les, meaning that's like treason in a way. sounds like a headcase, better trade him now before other teams get word of what a headcase he is and his value drops.

    Yao's reaction:

"I was as mad as when I heard I was drafted by the Houston Rockets... uhh, oops.. can we run that back? hey, hey you! stop that guy, that guy with the tape recorder! GET HIM!!.."

    Yao is probably thinking:

"Why can't I play for the Spurs? Robinson is a perennial softie, Duncan is a softie that can't shoot a FT. If I were on that Spurs team, I can be a softie and keep shooting the FTs, and I can win multiple championships"

Kind of reminds me of the Civil War battle fought after the South surrendered (because the news traveled so slow). In fact, didn't that skirmish, the last one of the war, take place in Texas?

It's amazing how you guys can turn an otherwise bland, generic statement into a controversy.

I think it's just a case of the natives being restless awaiting the next scoop. It's been kind of dry around here the past few days.

you see jeff, you notice that he didn't say that he considers tomjanovich "a great coach". also just said "friend" instead of "good friend", which implies to me that yao was against having rudy as a coach from the start. i've heard rumors from my cousin's hairstylist's great niece that he gave les an ultimatum that if rudy didn't go then he would. :p

Sounds like a classy statement to me. What did guys want him to weep or promise to kick somebody's arse when he gets back?
