http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=nba&id=2134880 Pacers waive G MillerSportsTicker National Basketball Association News Wire INDIANAPOLIS - Future Hall of Fame guard Reggie Miller, who previously announced his retirement, on Monday was waived by the Indiana Pacers as part of the NBA's new amnesty provision. Monday is the deadline for teams to invoke the amnesty clause, a one-time provision in the new collective bargaining agreement that allows teams to release players without their guaranteed salaries counting against the luxury tax. Miller, who spent his entire 18-year career with the Pacers and is their all-time leading scorer, announced during last season that he would end his career at the conclusion of their playoff run with one year left on his contract. Indiana fell to Detroit in the Eastern Conference semifinals, and Miller received an emotional send-off. The Pacers still must pay $6.25 million over the next two years to Miller, the NBA's all-time leader in 3-pointers made. His salary will count against the salary cap but not against the luxury tax, which has a threshold of $61.7 million this season. "In my conversations with Reggie, it is clear he will not play next year and therefore to take advantage of the amnesty rule, we designated Reggie as our amnesty player," Pacers CEO and president Donnie Walsh said. "I've spoken with Reggie and he is fine with it. "This will go down as his final assist."
ummm... wouldnt his retirement be a better alternative? I thought insurance picks up most the salary and it doesnt count against the cap. Unless that only applies to players that retire due to medical reasons. (Houston) J
He's still on the cap. And if I remember correctly from the coon cba faq, the Pacers can either choose to pay him or not to pay him, but he definitely counts against the cap. And yes, rooms4rentsf insurance isn't going to cover anything if there isn't a medical reason.
Retirees stay on the cap if they were still under contract. Jamal Mashburn last year serves as an example, as did Terrell Brandon's contract (the one that seemingly never went away). The jist of it is, the Pacers nabbed some lux tax savings without actually losing a player. They just made his retirement payments tax-free for the team. Evan

even if reggie isn't going to be playing, he only had one more year left on his contract. shouldn't they have cut pollard or crochere?
