I posted this in the other thread, so probably shouldn't start a new one, but I did...........I apologize beforehand if that upsets anyone. Texans have signed Morlon Greenwood of the Dolphins to a five year contract. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2004143
Terrible signing. What is the point of this? Who's he going to replace? Foreman Peek Babin Wong Sharper This is a solid core of LB's, why spend money on a guy who's not an improvement over any of them and who could possibly stunt the growth of Peek? I would have been happier not to sign anyone this offseason. Resign Payne, draft wisely and use the cap money to keep the young talent around. Or at least sign an impact player like a Plaxico Burress or Samari Rolle.
Horrible signing, pay the guy all that money and he can't a interception or sack last season. We need impact players and Peek should start. Start him for a full season and guarntee he gets double-digit sacks. I wonder what they do with Jay Foreman now since Greenwood would probley move inside. I also heard the Texans may considering releasing Jamie Sharper if he doesn't restructure his contract so that why the may have did this.
Article states Wong will be moved to the inside, so putting another young outside LB with potential is worth it ... especially someone coveted by other teams. Not sure about the contract, but I am more excited than disappointed.
Bad signing? I'm not sure, but I bet that the Texans have done SIGNIFICANTLY more scouting on Greenwood than you have. And they're never going to start Peek until he can control himself on the field.
I have to agree that we might not know that much about him but the Texans scouting, coaching, and GM's have done a good job so far assembling the team so i would give them some credit and see where they are going with this. He is a young guy and had a good number of tackles for the Dolphins last year.
you also have to rememebr jaime sharpers deal comes up I believe after this season. Greenwood will start but I do not know who will sit.
gary walker has been to the pro bowl for us so do not act like he has never done a thing for the texans.
i think Peek and Foreman are going to be the guys that are in competion with Greenwood. And they might be getting ready to lose Sharper after his contract expires and probably wants a raise.
Greenwood is not better than Foreman. They're very similar players, both solid but unspectacular. Greenwood 6'0 238 Foreman 6'1 240 Neither had a sack last year. Greenwood is three years younger so that's a plus. Other than that I think this money could have been better spent elsewhere. Lenny P's take on Greenwood: Doesn't often make the big hit or the game-altering turnover but can play both outside spots and performs with an economy of motion and a notable efficiency.
Good signing; will most likely replace Foreman who was benched last year before he got hurt. I love how some people rush to judgment without even seeing him play. I'll take Casserly and Caper's judgment over the morons that get all of their scouting from ESPN and Len P. These are likely the same sort of people that said drafting Dunta was a bad decision before even seeing him play..
I've seen Greenwood play, Lenny's description is right on. C and C sure made good judgments on Charlie Clemons and Kieth Mitchell didn't they?
they sure did make good judgements on dd aj dunta david carr... sharper etc.. every team has bad choices
Phillyrocket, who cares if Greenwood didnt have a sack last year. The Dolphins defensive scheme doesnt allow many opportunities for the LBs to get to the QB. Look at Zach Thomas...3.5 sacks over the last 3 seasons...He must suck!! A good thing about this deal is that I dont see Sharper being on this team much longer. His contract is slowly coming to an end and he is making a boatload of money. In the future, I see a linebacking corp of Greenwood, Wong, Babin, and Peek/someone else. The price tag may look excessive, but we need linebackers. In this defense, you cant have enough of them.
Conceded, however Clemons and Mitchell were like Greenwood LBs. Also they were vets unlike the players you mentioned. I have full confidence in their drafting ability, their free agent signings are usually very solid as well. However they have swung and missed on about every FA LB brought it. Wong included, he's never made the impact they had hoped at OLB. That's why there's discussion to move him back inside. I'm not trying to trash C and C. I'm sure there's another motive behind this move, like Sharper's contract negotiations might not being going well. On the surface though I don't like the signing.
You think Greenwood will get more opportunities here? 3-4 ILB's drop back into coverage for the most part, the OLB rush the QB. Now if the plan is to put Greenwood at OLB whom would like to see him replace? Babin the first round pick who needs to develop or Peek the only LB we have that commands a double team? Wong would be moved inside if Greenwood was at OLB.
