HOUSTON -- Houston Texans No. 1 draft pick Mario Williams will be sidelined for the rest of the week after having the toenails on both of his big toes removed.

Williams, a 6-foot-7, 292-pound defensive end, had the procedure done on Monday after struggling with infections because of problems with his toenails.

Houston has been going through organized team workouts for the past month and had their first day of minicamp on Wednesday.

"They were bothering him throughout the camp," said Texans coach Gary Kubiak. "So instead of trying to fight it, they removed them. We're giving him a few days off to make sure it heals properly."

Kubiak said Williams would probably return to practice on Friday.

"We just didn't want it to be a problem when we got to the summer so we took care of it now," Kubiak said.

Williams, who signed a six-year $54 million contract, with $26.5 guaranteed the night before the draft, spent practice intently watching all the drills Houston's other ends and tackles performed.

Is this a new tradition with Houston sports #1 overall picks? Maybe Carr is next.

At least he was smart enough to let a doctor cut it out instead of doing it himself...

I had my right big toenail taken out in 7th grade after a series of ingrowns. The Doc just sliced it up a bit so extra scar tissue would form on top. No problems since, though it did tend to gross out the chicks at pool parties. Now, my kids think it's cool.

I have honestly never heard of the procedure, so is it like having a cat declawed? I mean, a nail will never grow back there?

If they do it right, the nail grows back normal. Sounds like somebody had a butcher doctor slicing and dicing their toe there. I've had both of my big toenails taken completely off and they both regrew and you could never tell they were taken off. Quit having ingrowns too.

Look at it this way. At least he is lighter on his feet now. ;)

I mentioned losing a big toenail in the Yao Ming thread a few months ago. The new one has grown back nicely. Without going into graphic detail again, I cut the other one off last weekend. Maybe it's time for me to get some new bball shoes. I think that may be the problem.

my uncle had this done to both his big toes, and a few other toes as well.

toenails are totally worthless.. dont do jack! for somebody with chronic toenail problems it really is a blessing to get rid of em.

what bothers me is that i haven't seen or heard one report on how mario williams has PLAYED during minicamp. i've seen pictures, but have yet to see even an amateur report on his progress. not ONE.

moreover, has anyone seen or heard a national interview with mario? when was the last time an nfl #1 pick had exactly zero national interviews post draft? given the controversy behind the pick and the national interest that generated, i would it would be a natural followup to do interviews with williams in the days/weeks following the draft. nope. not ONE.

what the hell is going on in houston?

I'm not sure why that bothers you. I've seen/heard interviews with Kubiak saying he has consistently been in the backfield breaking up plays. Remember, they're playing in shorts and T-shirts, not full contact. They're not playing anything NEAR full speed. They're basically just learning the plays.

Again, I'm not sure why that bothers you. If you're talking about the lack of coverage by the Houston media, well of course I agree with you. You can't have too much Texan coverage for my taste. :D

But if you're saying you're worried about Mario because no one is interviewing him, I'm not sure I understand your concern.
