http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=nfl&id=2063186 Associated Press HOUSTON -- Kick returner J.J. Moses, the NFL's shortest player last season at 5-foot-6, was released Wednesday by the Houston Texans. Moses was Houston's lead returner on punts and kickoffs over the past two years, retaining that role despite repeated attempts by the Texans to upgrade the position. Meanwhile, tight end Bennie Joppru, a second-round draft pick in 2003, could miss his third straight year after tearing a right knee ligament during an offseason practice. An MRI exam revealed that Joppru tore the anterior cruciate ligament in a workout Monday. The team said he will undergo surgery sometime in the next two weeks. The timetable for a return is uncertain. The Texans on Wednesday signed free agent tight end Marcellus Rivers to take Moses' roster spot. Rivers caught 27 passes for 227 yards and four TDs in four years with the New York Giants. Recently acquired cornerback Phillip Buchanon, rookie fourth-round pick Jerome Mathis and free-agent receiver Reggie Swinton will compete for Moses' kick-return job. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Joppru was a star at Michigan but has yet to play in the NFL. As a rookie Joppru injured his groin during the first week of training camp and spent the rest of the year on injured reserve. Another groin injury sidelined him last season.
Moses had great elusiveness and field vision, but he lacked break away speed to get to the end zone. He just didn't have that extra gear.
bye bye little JJ. You played hard while you were here, but I think my grandmother could post a better 40 time than you.
Im sure someone will pick him up. Buchanon and Mathis are major upgrades to our special teams. Mathis returned 6tds in one season. Thats amazing.
Well, I doubt there will be any disappointment among the fans. We'll be much better off. My guess is that it will probably be Swinton to start the season and see how Mathis comes along.
