While the article doesn't go into details, the headline and picture on ESPN's NBA home page today says that Shane Battier, Elton Brand and Joe Johnson were in the lineup that closed out a CLOSE 90-86 Team USA win over Brazil. Rockets fans have got to LOVE this. Yeah, I know it's Coach K coaching this team, but for Shane Battier to be the best power forward on Team USA to close out a close game, that says something about how clutch he is.

I'm finally starting to warm up to the idea of Battier playing PF on the Rockets. Those who say that international competition isn't the same as the NBA, take a look at some of these teams. International teams have PLENTY of size. Actually, Team USA is one of the smaller teams in the frontcourt compared to some other teams (it is the BACKCOURT where the USA has a big size advantage).

On a team with Elton Brand (who played center in the game-clinching lineup), Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard and Antawn Jamison all available to play PF, it was Shane Battier who manned the PF position for Team USA to secure its win.

    I'm excited.

Yo pessimist, stop living in June 2006, and come forward to August. We don't need that kind of crap here.

Thanks for the post BimaThug. Looking forward to the new season.

Why do I have a feeling that Yo is one of the guys I schooled at the neighborhood pavillions and wanted to beat my ass because I took away his moves and exposed him as a weak shooter.

Stick to the playground Yo and take Gay with you, Leave smart basketball to Battier and guys who work hard.

Rudy Gay has done as much as you in the NBA, nothing.

Battier will have much more of an impact for years to come than some young hyped without creditentials boy who will eventually start whining for the ball.

Um... no. What a troll. When he hits a few of these during the year and Rudy Gay is off doing nothing just like Stromile Swift, you'll disappear back into the hole in the ground from whence you came. In fact, I suggest you go back there now to save yourself the embarassment.

    1) I'm impressed!

    2) But he's playing with an ALL star team.

    3) It was against Brazil.

    4) Well, I'm faking being impressed to make myself feel better.

    5) Just Git-R-Done in a Rockets Uni, and then we'll see how I feel.

Yeah but int'l PF's sit on the perimeter taking jumpers, they are not Dwight Howard/Elton Brand types - that's a different animal altogether.

    I'll play devil's advocate...

Battier played for Coach K and like Brand probably knows what coach wants and can deliver. The same way Van Gundy seems comfortable with his ex-Knicks, Coach K is probably comfortable with ex-Duke players.

Again, I think Battier is a nice addition, but at the same time I don't think he's the missing piece and I don't think he can play significant minutes at PF. I just don't think he can rebound well enough when matched up against a lot of the league's PFs, whether it's a big guy like Duncan or a quick guy like Marion, etc.

Umm, let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

He hasn't looked so impressive in the playoffs with the Grizzlies thus far.

He played for Coach K - of course he's going to get the minutes. He's also playing with an All-Star team.

I personally think he will fit in great with the Rockets, but that doesn't change the fact that we got robbed in the trade and it certainly doesn't mean he's some difference maker on a USA team that should be man handling the competition.

In the game against China he had five boards in 15 minutes, that translates to double digits in a 35 minute role for the Rockets.....Most of us would take that and be happy from him.

I won't get too excited or too pessimistic based upon international play. What I will say is that Battier is a solid pro whose defensively ability and versatility will help us go big with McGrady at the two and Battier defending the best wing or go small with Battier creating space for Yao at the four using his solid perimeter shot.

I don't think anyone expects Battier to play the majority of his minutes at either position but to give us added flexibility to create better matchups for our two stars.

After seeing how that Santiago guy from the Puerto Rican teamed pushed him around we well have problems at the 4 position. SERIOUS ONES

That same guy pushed Bosh around, but I don't think that's a real indicator of Bosh's abilities. Btw, I don't want Battier at the 4 either.

I figured the comment on his head would give it away but evidently not. Look at the uproar! I feel like Ann Coulter up in here. :D
