What's so classic about this game? Playoff game? Rockets lineup: Olajuwon Thorpe Buck Johnson Mad Maxwell Sleepy Floyd Derrick Chievous John Lucas Larry Smith Mitch Wiggins
Hakeem's 52 points. Classic. No crowd for that game, but he was Superman that night. Great one to watch.
Without even looking, I am going to guess that those were the Paul Westhead coached Nuggets. They were all offense and no defense. I remember they gave up 140 points a game pretty often, and sometimes more than that. They flat out just tried to outscore their opponents and run them to death. Michael Adams was famous for pulling up on a break and firing in those god awful looking 3 pointers.
Here is a link to the old Chronicle recap: http://www.chron.com/content/archiv...t=&type=&user=houston&sview=1&hview=2&dview=1 BTW, for those of you who watch this, and have never seen or known who MIchael Adams is ..................youll have a hard time disagreeing afterwards that he had the ugliest shot in NBA history.
Playing in Denver, that is not a bad idea. I mean, think about it, you are up in the thin air, and you run up and down constantly. That would tire out your opponents. And is this Central Time?
Damn you Codell(jj). You sent me to a chron.com sight that wanted me to pay $$$$$. I was actually excited too. lol
Yes, it's Central time and yes, this epitomizes the greatness of this guy. Keep in mind as you're watching he has breathing difficulties in places like Utah and Denver due to the high altitude. And yes, this was the no-defense Nuggets... up and down basketball.
Yeah I'm pretty sure I was at the Magnificent Summit to see this game....I think Rasmussen made a bunch of shots on us in overtime or something and we lost..
I remember Mike Newlin announcing when the Rockets were about to lose: "The Rockets can't lose this game; it just can't happen; they deserve to win", or something like that.
sweet, thanks for the heads up. i guess i watched the rockets more than i thought before 92-93 because i can remember a whole lot of games from before then once they're brought up. i definitely remember seeing this one.
YIKES!!! Hard to believe Lucas was still playing then. Think I'll tune into this one. Thanks for the heads up
wow, maxwell and thorpe were already on the team? and floyd wasn't that terrible. was the difference between first round fodder and title winning team really just horry, smith, and cassell minus floyd? or did hakeem just become that much better. or did rudy just know how to put it all together that much more. hakeem just racked up either 12 or 14 in the 3rd and he's still got 22 to go. fun watching the "old" hakeem instead of the old hakeem. and one thing that stands out, our whole team is black (at least the guys i've seen on the court so far). i keep wondering where all the white guys are. this is only a few months removed from the 80's. and this game resembles today's game about 10x more than some of the stuff you see even from around 87 or so. post men actually being doubled, defense actually being played. some athleticism on the court, guys with muscles.
The best answer for this is that It was a combination of those factors you mentioned. But in order, Hakeem became much better as he started trusting his teammates (thanks to rudy), the rockets struck it rich by drafting some big time role players, and finally, Maxwell started playing more under control on the offensive end.
