This is the showdown between Nique and Jordan in Chicago when Nique was robbed. Coming on in 30min. They've been showing old dunk contests and All Star games this morning.

I had the 1987 one on there for a while .... I didn't realize that Jordan barely made the first cut. He was 4th out of 4 after the first round.

I still can't believe the current dunk contest is FOUR contestants... and one of them is Chris Anderson. Man has this thing dropped like a rock. Of course, that doesn't stop Magic Johnson:

"We're back! I want you to listen to me: The NBA slam dunk contest is back. We are back!! The NBA is back. You hear me? Dunkers are back. Back, back, back!! Parachute pants are back. My money-making ability as a star of this league is back. Baby's got back. BAAAAAAAAAACK!"

Maybe Magic meant this year was a lot better than the past few (after the Vince Carter show).

Yeah, Magic Johnson was clearly over the top last night but that's right up the alley for him.

I respect 80's basketbll as much as anyone else, but these guys today are blowing these old dunk contests out the water. The dunks that Jason Richardson won with and Vince Carter won with would've been unheard of in the eighties.

Its amazing that TNT was able to stretch it out for an hour last night with only four guys.

I think the main thing though, is the competition...Richardson basically ran away with it. The year Vince won was so good because you had Steve Francis compete as best anyone could with Vince Carter.

If you had a group like Spud, Drexler, Jordan, Nique in the same Dunk Contest ( say SF, Richardson, Vince, Tmac, Kobe, Mason, Smith) , no one would be questioning the Dunk Contest. Having 4 contestants, only 2 really being legit, is pathetic and it shows...

I just watched this whole thing for the first time through: A couple of things:

    1. they did screw Wilkens on that last one

    2. THe myth of the golden age of the slam dunk competition seems kind of deflated. The dunks those guys did seemed kind of boring. The guys today seem to try to do a lot more. I think Vince Carter's performance back in the year that he was going at it w/Francis was the best I've seen.

francis gets lost cause he went up against carter but his overall performance would have won him any year since then.
