Chad Ford: (12:18 PM ET ) They (dallas) just made the first trade of the day sending Anthony Johnson to the Hawks for the Hawks 2007 second round pick. It's a BLOCKBUSTER folks. Hawks fans you can rest easy ... after passing on Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Rajon Rondo and Marcus Williams and overpaying Speedy Claxton ... the Hawks have finally solved their point guard woes.

Unfortunately, I usually have to watch nearly every Hawks game and believe me when I tell you how bad their PG play has really been. We're talking WORST in the league, bad. Any improvement is an improvement in their eyes.

I watch them too, living here in Georgia. I agree. Now only if they can win the lottery. ;)

So they can pass on Oden and Durant for Joakim "solid role player - best case scenario" Noah?

did they have a chance to draft chris paul? if so, they have to be kicking themselves every day. a team like that could really benefit from a good pg. someone was making the point on the radio, there really are few point guards who actually make teamates better. to have a chance to get one and pass is really bad, for a marvin williams type whom you're hoping pans out.

Yeah, they passed on Paul. They went the conventional route of "good big man is better than good little man" evaluation. Many times that's the case, but not in "today's NBA." In today's NBA the PG position is a lot more valuable because of the way the rules are called and the fact there are more uptempo teams.

Damn it. This would happen when we have to play the Hawks on Friday. Their PG play should be improved quite a bit by this.

Didn't the mavs just sign Anthony Johnson in the off season?

Good move by Atlanta. Johnson can surely help them, and take some ball-handling pressure off Joe Johnson.

They did, but he wasn't getting much playing time. Terry and Harris were getting all the PG time. They don't play much SG since Deavan George/Buckner were getting those minutes.

The Mavs were just making a salary dump for a player they felt they didn't need.

AJ is low cost, so a good move for the Hawks perspective. Nothing earth shattering, but a solid move. And just goes to show how much they are not in love with Speedy's play this season.

    Edit

    Nevermind, that was Tinsley

Interesting 'analysis' from the same Ford/Chat:

Bill (Austin): Chad what are your thoughts on the Hawks getting Anthony Johnson for the Mavs' second round pick for the 07 draft?

Chad Ford: From ESPN.com's own Nick Silva, our cap guru: "The Hawks-Mavs trade saved Dallas 2.64M in tax for this year and 5.72M next year (2.86M salary + 2.86M tax) and they got the Hawks pick in the second round which is 37 right now and they gained a 2.64M trade exception."

Once again Billy Knight is helping out one of the best teams in the league. He needs a lifetime achievement award.

They could have taken Chris Paul or Deron Williams (who was drafted ahead of Chris Paul). I was never on the Marvin Williams bandwagon. Just another stupid mistake by Billy Knight. I love him from his Pacer days but he personifies incompetence as a GM.

The Hawks could actually have a Chris Paul/Brandon Roy backcourt and no worries in that area, other than injuries, for the next 10 years.
