Heard some new guys on the way in. they said they were auditioning. can't listen right now but what I did get to hear they were from the northeast. I don't think they are going to get the gig but they might get better. sounds like they are trying to hard.
I just posted this in another 790 thread: KBME (790 AM) will pre-empt ESPN Radio's Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic show today and Tuesday morning to audition two more candidates for its morning show and to give a second listen to Rochester, N.Y., host Brad Davies, who auditioned for the job last month. Scott Ledger, who works for WXTB in Tampa, Fla., and Danny Havel, who most recently was at KUGN and KSCR in Eugene, Ore., will team with Davies from 8 a.m. to noon both days. Davies and Ledger will work from 8 to 10 a.m. and Davies and Havel from 10 a.m. to noon, said Ken Charles, Clear Channel Radio's Houston programming VP. http://www.houstonchronicle.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/3878801.html
Why cant they get guys that are from houston to do these shows? I am tired of these eastcoast guys doing sports talk in houston.
I agree. I just want some hosts that actually talk sports. This morning with John and Lance has been brutal. I mean, it is the day of TWO game 7s in the playoffs and all they are talking about is Bonds. Who gives a crap? He cheated, he didn't cheat. I really don't care at this point. Everytime someone calls in to change the direction of the discussion, the hosts bring it right back to Bonds. Just need another local morning alternative when 610 is obssessing over a topic.
I was thinking the same thing. they were almost refusing to talk nba. that's why charlie is hands down the best host in this market. he's objective, he has his finger on the pulse of what people want to talk about, he has the right mix of calls and himself. its really becoming hard to listen to anyone else, even nationally.
Agreed. During the 30 minute segment on the state of Rice University athletic facilities, you could practically hear the radio stations changing throughout Houston.
If it comes down to one of these two guys they MUST hire the guy from Rochester, NY. The guy from Oregon just said, "I'm not an NBA fan." That's the nail in the coffin in my book. The guy from NY says he IS a big NBA fan.
The ironic thing is even if Rice updated all of their facilities to state of the art standards, they still wouldn't get and coverage on 610 anyway. So why get on the air to b**** about it?
Carl Dukes is getting f**ked on this deal. He is local, engaging and a library of sports knowledge. Additionally he is an African American, and with all the race in sports his is a voice that needs to held in higher regard. My vote goes to Carl Dukes and "Rachael from Houston".
Carl needs a co-host. he's like matt was before wexler came back. very few are talented enough to carry their own show. plus that evening time slot is hard. I'm sports talked out by then even if I'm in the car.
I totally agree but he is really engaging and would be a nice alternative to John and Lance. No disrespect to them.
Carl is absolutely brutal to listen to in my opinion. I've tried many times but I just can't do it. The guy really gets on my nerves, I can't last more than 5 minutes. I'd rather listen to Rich Lord, and that's saying something.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/3898891.html Clear Channel Houston programmer Ken Charles could decide by early next week on his new morning team for KBME (790 AM). He already has decided, however, that Carl Dukes will stay where he is, anchoring KBME's SportsBeat nighttime show. Charles said his decision was not a reflection on Dukes' talent and value to the station but his conviction that a new show needs a new team. "We need to go in with no history, without preconceived notions," Charles said. "It's got to be something fresh and different, a new start." The three candidates for the two jobs are Rochester, N.Y., host Brad Davies, who auditioned for the job last month; Scott Ledger, who works for WXTB in Tampa, Fla.; and Danny Havel, who most recently was at KUGN and KSCR in Eugene, Ore.
Of the guys who tried out in this group, I thought the guy they picked was the best of the 3. At least they didn't pick the guy who said, "I'm not that big of an NBA fan." http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4030043.html TV-RADIO NOTEBOOK [bDavies joins KBME for morning drive time[/b] By DAVID BARRON Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle KBME (790 AM) has hired Brad Davies of Rochester, N.Y., to co-host its morning drive time talk show, which will launch in mid-August, and expects to announce Davies' co-host within the next week. Ken Charles, AM program director for Clear Channel Communications' Houston stations, said Davies and his partner will work from 7 to 10 a.m. weekdays, opposite KILT's (610 AM) morning show, which airs from 6 to 11 a.m. ESPN Radio's Mike Greenberg/Mike Golic show will air from 5 to 7 a.m., and KBME will pick up the Colin Cowherd show in progress at 10 a.m. Click to learn more... "Brad will be a great addition to the radio station, and we're looking forward to building a great morning show with him," Charles said. "We want to have an entertaining, fun show. If you take Sports Illustrated, GQ, Cigar Aficionado and People magazine and mash them together, that would be the show." Davies, 34, a lifelong East Coast resident who has worked at stations in Syracuse and Utica, N.Y., made two trips to Houston to audition for the job. "The opportunity is just too good to pass up," he said. "My wife and I took time and thought about it, and we're very excited about coming to Texas." Charles will hire a co-host to work with Davies and also could hire a third cast member to read news updates. Carl Dukes, who hosts the nighttime SportsBeat show, auditioned for the morning show, but Charles said earlier he was inclined to bring in a new face for the new show. However, there was no indication Thursday that the other candidates who auditioned earlier this year, Scott Ledger of Tampa, Fla., or Danny Havel of Eugene, Ore, remain in the running. Charles said he could use a member of Clear Channel's Houston staff to read updates or could hire an outsider. He said a female voice could be a good tactic to draw listeners in the targeted male 25-54 demographic. "We want to find the best person," he said. "If there's a woman out there who can do the job, I'd love to hear from her."
FINALLY! Houston will finally get a sports morning show that isn't just pathetic. John and Lance are the acoustic equivalence of that diarrhea scene from Dumb and Dumber. We finally get a REAL local talent with a REAL journalistic background. Syracuse baby! 790 is going to DOMINATE!
