Basically same stuff we have seen all year....the writers making the Texans out to be idiots for drafting Williams...going so far as to say this is the same as Bowie being picked before MJ. I don't mind eating crow if that is the case...but how can they be giving this much credit to a player tha hasn't done a thing in the preseason. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/060906 To the Texans. First, they passed on the next Gale Sayers (Reggie Bush) to take a project defensive lineman (Mario Williams) and nearly caused a riot with their beleaguered fan base. Then they explained their mind-set by saying, "We need help on defense, we don't need a running back when we already have Dominick Davis," which was like Vanity Fair passing up a chance to run the Suri Cruise photos because they were already locked into a photo spread with Gwyneth Paltrow's second kid. Then they dumped GM Charlie Casserly, which always makes your fans feel good when you follow up the biggest decision in franchise history by immediately firing the guy who made it. Then Davis' knee problems grew worse and worse, culminating in his getting placed on injured reserve this week. Then somebody named Wali Lundy was named the starting running back for Week 1. And this entire sequence unfolded in the span of five months. So why am I giving the Texans a thumbs up? Because it took 21 years, but we finally have a scenario that knocks Bowie-over-MJ off the board. See, Portland taking Sam Bowie was at least SOMEWHAT defensible -- nobody knew MJ would be a superduperstar, they had Clyde Drexler (a future Hall of Famer) playing the same position, and everyone forgets this, but Sam Bowie would have been an All-Star center if he stayed healthy. In fact, when he was healthy during the 1985-86 season, the Blazers gave the World Champion Celtics (who ended up going 82-18) more trouble than anyone -- they even were the only team to win in the Garden that season, and Bird had to toss up 49 points, a game-tying shot in regulation and a game-winner in OT just to fend them off in Portland. Sam Bowie was no joke. The guy was good. And by the way, the Rockets also passed on MJ for Hakeem. Nobody remembers that part. Reggie Bush Who needs Reggie Bush when you can just give the ball to Wali Lundy? Look, I'm not condoning the move -- Portland should have taken MJ. But the Blazers' logic for taking Bowie was, at the very least, understandable. Houston's logic was never understandable; the Texans' decision to pass on Bush was shockingly brainless from the moment it happened, if only because you can't disappoint your fans to that degree unless there's a really, really, REALLY good reason. Now it looks like the dumbest sports decision of the past 25 years … and that's before we find out Reggie Bush's ceiling, both as an impact running back and personality. I just find the whole thing to be amazing. In a weird way, I'm glad it happened. Incompetence is always more interesting than competence. So thumbs up, Houston Texans. Well done. You're the sports version of Enron.
does this guy seriously still have a job? i think he writes his articles from the corner of Myopic and Irrelevant. why don't we let the guys play a down first? the bowie over jordan thing only looked bad after the fact. why don't we let this one play out first, too? how about at least having them play one regular season game yet before we start jumping to 25 year conclusions?
He's admitted (and from his writing it's obvious) that he only casually follows college football so it's not surprising that he'd have the view of Bush as savior of all mankind. That illustrates how powerful the hype machine is.
you can't really blame him. this is how most of national sports writers, fans, and some houston fans are probably feeling after: 1. DD is on the IR list 2. a relative unknown is our starting RB 3. we had an opportunity to squash all second guessing, questions, doubts by drafting Reggie Bush I mean, I support the Texans and especially Mario Williams but with all that has been going on, of course the Bowie-over-MJ analogies are gonna be pulled out in full force
OK, those are harsh words; yet being a Houston fan, I agree 100%. I certainly hope I am proven wrong, though I am definitely not that optimistic. By the way, when do the oilers come back?
It's pretty apparent the guy hasn't watched either Bush or Lundy play in the preseason, because if he had he wouldn't be sticking his neck out like this. Well, scratch that. He probably saw the amazing Bush 44 yd. run that ESPN played 600 million times. But that's probably it. The guy doesn't care about getting predictions right. His job is to be entertaining. Does he note that Casserly did a ****ty job as GM before he was let go? Hell no. Does he note that Casserly's influence and decision making were severely limited in this last draft before he was let go? Hell no. Does he note the inconsistency in proclaiming Reggie Bush the next Gale Sayers while claiming Mario Williams is a project? Hell no. Because none of that makes for funny reading. I don't know why he doesn't just stick to the Jimmy Kimmel show now. That's what he's better at anyway.
Whenever anybody brings up the Bowie/Jordan comparison, they never bring up (H)Akeem. Isn't is possible that they both end up being great players and cornerstones of their respective franchises? According to the media the answer is no. One has to succeed while the other fails and it's a better story is the player taken higher busts. You know, watching the team this preseason you observe the "one cut and go" philosophy in the running game. Bush is NOT a one cut and go guy. If he were to adhere to our running philosophy, he'd have to make drastic changes in the way he runs the football. Whether he'd succeed in our scheme or not, I can't say. But at the surface, it appears that RB's running style doesn't mesh the Texans scheme. Nobody ever brings that up and it's a valid point. I for one am happy with the Mario decision and the member of the media who contiually beat a dead horse even they apparently don't know **** about our team can kiss my ass. Oh yeah, we knew Casserley was resigning(fired) BEFORE the freakin' draft. This prick is trying to make is sound like he was fired for passing on Bush. Way to get your facts straight JACKHOLE!
5 years from now, Simmons will write an article comparing Reggie Bush to Peter Warrick and Desmond Howard.
Don't forget the one and only Rocket Ismael that was goign to change and revolutionize the game much like they say about Bush. Ill hold off al judgment on any rookie until they play a down in the NFL.
Actually, I did in the DD on the IR thread. Well, how can you argue with such sussinct points and thought-provoking analysis? Get off of Daddy's computer and finish your dinner. Now. I said NOW!!!
