There is a very good chance that Charlotte will now waive Erick Dampier, allowing him to become a FA. I realize that I will most likely get flamed for this thread but at the right price, he'd be a fine pick up. He's the same age as Brad Miller, could probably had for a lower price than Miller, and is more of a rim protector than Miller.

Comeon, leave pointless stuff like that out. You're wasting bandwidth by posting stupid threads like this.

I agree. I'd like people to explain why Dampier is such a horrible player that we shouldn't consider. Can't use overpaid as the reason anymore.

I just posted this in the NBA Dish thread, but since it has merits here...

The real thing to discuss, from a Rocket's perspective, would be if there is any chance to pick up Dampier after he is let go. The issue will, of course, be how much of an ego he has in regards to his price for the new contract.

But as easy as it has been to, and as much as Dallas has, crapped on him, he actually gives the Rockets much more of what they need than Brad Miller does. The Rockets need length, defense and rebounding, not a supposed offensive center who can't shoot and whose best passing days are behind him.

Dampier is old also, and certainly wouldn't want to give a ton of minutes to, but like he did last year and pretty much every year for the last few in Dallas, if in 20-25 mpg he can give you over 7 boards a game and 1-1.5 blocks per game, and only shoot when he knows he can make it (hence the 4 year in a row >60% FG%)...then he's basically your replacement Deke....just younger.

Now, Dampier isn't exciting, young or the long term solution...but vs. Brad Miller, I think it's a no brainer. The frontcourt needs on this team are length, defense and rebounding from your backup center position. Miller gets a check for one of those items, Dampier does for all three.

I know Dampier is pretty hated in these parts and this thread will probably get only 1-2 stars but does anyone else think he might be worth signing as our backup 5.

He just got traded to Charlotte and will probably be waived. He said he wants the MLE and in this market you figure that he'll probably get it. So what do you think he's worth?

Edit: Opps. Didn't realize that Damp is 35 years old. So the Full MLE option is patently ridiculous. I can't figure out how to edit the poll though.

The dude is worthless on the defensive as well as the offensive end.

The dude's major issue was he was overpaid and he opened his big mouth 5 years ago. The guy would be an excellent backup 5 for the right price.

Dampier is servicable. But for what price? At league Minimum, he might just go to Heat.

Miami is looking at Big Z.

Dampier would be nice though for the right price.

    Certainly an upgrade over Andersen.

I would only sign him for the veteran minimum... anything beyond that is overpaying.

Dallas just traded one backup for another.

Neither Chandler nor Dampier is a viable starter, but as a backup?

What, do we have a BETTER option than Dampier on our roster right now?

Considering that neither Dampier nor Miller really gives me goosebumps with anticipation, and that ultimately basketball-wise they are probably about equal, I would still lean to Miller, because it seems pretty evident that he has the better hoops IQ, and he is intimately familiar with Adelman's system.

But I would not scream and cry about Dampier. Hopefully our backup 5 will not wind up having to carry much of a load.
