"Clapton is God", but why? My money is on Page as the better guitarist, even specifically better "blues" (in the white English sense of the word) guitarist, which is what is supposed to be Clapton forte' eh? Eh? Discuss and site examples.
i thought this was going to be a link to some celebrity deathmatch-type sch!tt... lame. maybe they can still kill each other and put the rest of us out of our misery soon...
If I had to choose, in their prime, it would be Clapton. However, in 2006....I choose neither. Page's skills have eroded severely, and Clapton is on such "autopilot" nowadays that it isn't even enjoyable to watch him.
I'll go all out and say a 12-year-old James Page on British national television was better than Clapton ever was. OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH!!!!!111 Still, Hendrix was better than a million Clapton's and Page's. Of course, not for longevity. Even if he didn't OD, he couldn't have played many more years with the **** he did to his brain. But, hey, that **** he did to himself was for my enjoyment, right?
If I played guitar I'd be Jimmy Page The girlies I like are underage Girls with boyfriends are the kind I like I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike
I'll go all out and say that your brain is oxygen-deficient because your head is stuck too far up your ass!
I don't know and don't care who's more talented, as they say, but I'll take a Zeppelin record over anything Clapton's done. Page is my favorite guitarist.
Haha, that's fair. I was just amazed at what l'il James Page could do in '56. Besides Clapton, Hendrix, and Page, a few others come to mind as most talented (not best). I think of guys like Dick Dale, Steve Vai, and Yngwie as most talented if someone were to just hand them a guitar and tell them to start playing (I'm talking about living people here so Hendrix doesn't count. Also Keith Richards doesn't count either because he's not one of the most talented, nor is he considered "living".)
Why ask this question? They are both wildly enjoyable blues rock guitarist that have made some of the best music ever; and some stinkers. My CD player plays them both so I don't really have to choose (and my amplifier turns up to 11) On Clapton's last CD he really doesn't even feature the lead guitar that much, it's more about the songwriting and production. But I will say at his best, Page is more powerful and exciting. He can just push you back in your seat.
All Page did on TV in 1956 was play rhythm guitar in a skiffle band. His greatness didn't come through until he started doing recording sessions in London 8 years later, and it really started to shine when he joined the Yardbirds. Dick Dale I agree with you on 100%. I would add Danny Gatton and Richard Thompson to the list (hand them a guitar and watch them wail). Keith Richards counts because, even though he is not one of the most technically gifted guitar players in history, he invented a style all his own that many other guitar players have copied since.
A long time ago, even up to 3 months ago, I would say Page by far was the better guitarist than Clapton. However, I got a Cream greatest hits CD and I heard just how good Clapton was back then. I now feel that Clapton was probably slightly better than Page. But they both rank behind Hendrix.
