Has anyone used this rockbox firmware and replaced the crappy apple software on their iPod? Does it really "de-itune" the ipod?

if so, how is it? does it work well, ect...dying to know.

Messing with the software automatically voids any iPod insurance.

I put Linux on my ipod mini a few weeks ago. It boots up great, but it won't play any music. I haven't spent much time looking into why though. I'll probably give rockbox a try soon.

    I hate iTunes.

Hey. I just don't want anyone getting hit with a $90 service charge when sending in thier iPod in for service. The warranty and Apple Care covers this but if they find out the iPod was tampered with then all bets are off.

On a side note, to prove my anti-establishment dispostion, if you want to turn songs purchased on iTunes into MP3s so they can work on all portable mp3 players just burn them as a regular audio file on a CD and then reburn them back as MP3s. No password requisite for other machines and they play on other mp3 players. Re-entering the song info seems like the only hassle.

I use rockbox on my Iriver H350

The OS adds more custimization to my IRiver, and makes it run much faster. Personally, I love the Apple OS on the IPod. It's very intuitive, and looks very clean. Hell I've made my interface on my Iriver to look just like it!

That being said, if you want to use the Rockbox OS, it won't erase the OS that is already on ur device. All it does is make the mp3 player load it over the orginal OS. Usually they also have a method for going back and forth between OS's.
