    Anyone watch Enterprise?

Even though I havent watched too many series episodes I have seen all the movies but Im still not totally familiar with Star Trek.

I watched Enterprise and I liked it and I was wondering if it adds up to the other Star Trek series?BTW,I forgot her name but the new Volcan is hot!!!

On a side note,I was wondering why some of the TV shows are in widescreen format now?Two of my shows (Angel,Enterprise)so far have been like this, why the change?

Because Widescreen is superior to 4:3. :)

Truthfully, though, evenryone will eventually have 16x9 TVs, so I assume these shows' producers are simply shooting their shows in 16x9 format so that they'll fit the 16x9 TVs of the future (when these shows will hopefully still be in syndication).

There are several shows in widescreen now, including "Angel" and "er", and there will only be more shows originating in 16x9 as time goes on.

I watched Enterprise twice last night. Will probably watch it again today. I haven't really watched Star Trek much lately, but that show was awesome! (The Vulcan is Jolene Blalock - she's been in Maxim a couple times) It's like the stuff I liked about the original series but updated effects. And all the actors played off of each other well (Hoshi sounded a little stilted but I think her delivery will improve as the show goes on)

I'm as excited about this show as I am about Eddie Griffin. :)

I thought the show was "meh." Bakula was decent, though...

My opinion: One thing about Trek that made it easy to digest in the past was that the show was based in a far off time with rules, society, and technology different from ours today. When a crew member suggested increasing gamma sierra waves to polarize the warp core flux, thus preventing a warp core breach, we all took that with a grain of salt. Different times, different technology, different solutions. However, this new Trek blurs the line between today and tomorrow, IMO, which makes it extremely difficult to grasp. Take a look at the opening credits to see what I mean. They (the evil Rick Berman and Brannon Braga) want to make Enterprise the next "logical" step in mankind's evolution, instead of placing Trek in a time period we cannot possibly fathom (thereby making it easier for the viewer to digest). They're not trying to say, "Hey, this could be Earth's future, so enjoy what could be and be amazed and entertained." Instead, they seem to be going with the "Hey, this is Earth's future, so take note and see what we'll be doing in the near distant future" angle. This, IMO, places a lot of limitations on the show.

In theory, there should be no more Futurama-ST:Next Generation style random episodes about wormholes, time-traveling policemen, and rips in the space-time continuum, based on Berman's premise. However, you know Berman will resort to those tired plotlines and therefore lose me as a viewer. You can't have it both ways, Berman/Braga. Either you make the show gritty and realistic (or as realistic as the "could be" background of Stargate: SG1), or you go back to solving the most delicate of situations with Trek babble (and call it a day).

In the end, if Berman does what I expect him to (i.e. tread down the wrong path) and make a reality Trek with Next Generation plotlines, the show will be a mess. You may think I'm being overly critical now, but remember that even Earth: Final Conflct started out with a similar type of premise and descended into ridiculous technology-driven plotlines. Why can't they make shows like V anymore?

I'm not even going to try to explain its limitations as a prequel series to a 1960's television show...

Every new Star Trek has started rough. I still have a really tough time watching the first two or three seasons of the Next Generation and that was probably my favorite cast.

Bakkula really impressed me and I thought the characters had the familiar Trek ring to them. I liked the doctor, the woman linguist and the pilot. The first officer needs some work.

I HATED that scene with the first officer and the Vulcan rubbing each other with gel. What was up with that??? That seemed very anti-trek to me. It seems like they were trying to push the 7 of 9 envelope further but I just found it to be cheesy.

My guess is that it will be passable for the first season or two. Bakkula will likely keep it on its feet. I like him and I think they made a very good move casting him in that role.

As long as I don't have to see anymore #@#$% Data 'dream sequences' or any $#%$@ 'holodeck gone wild' episodes I'm fine. No Data in the time period and no holodecks....

I bet it's gonna be just fine.

I loved it, but then again, there are very few Star Trek shows I don't love. Trek isn't for everybody, but I certainly enjoy it. And I loved "Phantasms", which was the episode where Data had his dream sequence. I still remember the "Troi" cake. Looked delicious. And it's about time Star Trek had more sexual content. I was beginning to think that they didn't have sex in the future.

I just can't understand why they took "Star Trek" out of the title...

A few weeks later: This show is still pretty dang good. They have good characters (unlike voyager!). Are you all still watching it? I'm interested to see what fellow rox fans think of the show. So far I give it an A.

I've watched every episode, and I was starting to lose interest until last nights show. Most of the plots are just pure cheese. I laughed out loud at the episode with the abandoned colony town when they showed tumbleweeds drifting by. How cliche is that for an abandoned ghost town? Another example I can think of is the ghost stories around the camp fire. Also, I'd really like to see a Trek show with a solid story arc. After watching Babylon 5 and Farscape, Trek seems really weak in this area. One of the best things about B5 was that you were rewarded for watching each episode since the events that happened in the past episodes shape future episodes, and the entire five year plot was put together before any of the shows were produced. Trek just seems like a new adventure each week with little or no memory of previous experiences. I'm also unimpressed with how the transporters and the rest of the ship seem to work as well as they do. The original series showed all sorts of problems with the equipment, so you'd expect to see even more bugs/gliches in the prequel series. I give the series a C+, mainly because I like Scott Bakula. If I had to compare it to Voyager and DS9, instead of shows like B5 and Farscape I'd give it an A-.

Ren: Don't waste your time watching Voyager. I caught it on and off, hoping that it would fix some of the problems I had with it, but it never did. DS9, in the middle of its run, is 100X better.

Roxran: They haven't started filming yet. So maybe a year???

B: I like some of the cheesiness. The original series was cheesy. It's part of the fun. I keep expecting to not like episodes (like next week's, looks like a re-hash) when I see the previews, but when I sit and watch them, I've enjoyed each one. About story arcs, it looks like there will be some. The Andorians are going to be a solid arc (I'm excited about that) and that future-guy-thing from the premiere will be another arc (not sure if I'll like this arc or not, need to see more before making a decision) Did you not like the story arcs from the middle seasons of DS9?

    goophers,

I was too busy watching Babylon 5 to ever really get into DS9 that much, so I really don't know too much about the arcs in that show. I maybe watched 12 DS9 episodes total. You mention a couple of things that will be story arcs, but I haven't heard a thing yet about the future guy thing from the premiere. Hopefully it will be more than a one episode type deal. I should have prefaced my entire review with the fact that I watch very little tv other than Rockets games, and it takes a lot to get me just to watch a show. My current TV habits this year are Enterprise, Rockets games, reruns of B5, and Adult Swim/South Park when my roommate has it on. Wow, that's a lot of tv for me, last year all I watched were Rockets games, and a few other NBA games.

    Amazing...

I loved Star Trek when in first came out. Even named my dog Spock although he looked more like a Spot :D

STNG was way cool for me. Though I thought, at the time, Capt. Picard was a little weak compared to Kirk. It pained me to see Picard look like he was loosing a fight to a woman.

DS9 never took hold. I guess Voyager showed up shortly after and I was really taken by it. Two Treks at the same time was too much. Also, Sci-fi really hit the air waves about then.

Voyager, to me, rates! Of course, I love the women. Heck, I love all women of the world. I appreciate its attempt to put a female captain in the lead. I like Chakotays native american spirit. That was cool. 7 of 9 was...she was just hot, much more than Kess, though I did like her and was sorry to see her go. I still look forward to its reruns.

Enterprise. As a pure Trek fan, I sincerely hope it survives. I seem to be addicted to the whole Star Trek thing, leaving me oblivious to its faults...yes, I can admit that. What I find interesting is learning how certain things come about. It was cool to see the introduction of the holodeck.

    Long Live Star Trek!

    Engage!

Deep Space Nine was the best of the Star Trek series (excluding some of the originals). Babylon 5 showed the most promise the past decade as a series, but it kinda fizzled out after the Shadow War (years one and two).

Someone needs to come up with a completely new environment/story/universe... And Star Wars just won't cut it for my generation. A completely new approach is needed. Something totally new - just as all of the other greats were new at their respective times.

    Treeman,

Have you ever watched Farscape? I've only watched a few episodes, but I have heard very good things about it. You may want to rent the first few episodes on DVD and give it a shot. It definately has a new approach and the Henson team can make some really cool aliens.

I second B's motion. Farscape is the best sci-fi show on television. (Obviously, if Buffy was considered sci-fi, it would be #1.) The writing is stellar and imaginitive, the cast gives great performances day in and day out, the (always developing) characters have perfect interaction with each other, and the look of the show is cinema-quality.

As for Trek, Enterprise is just okay in my book. Read my comments further down (or is it up?) in this thread. ST:TNG is still the best Trek, bar none. DS9, due to being dark and edgy at times, is my second favorite (yeah, Section 31!). Voyager is like that random, crazy uncle you have that makes you feel uncomfortable and embarrassed when you're around him.

B: I am in the same boat about TV. I watch Rockets (every game at least in the background), Star Trek, and occassional parts of Sportscenter. If you only saw 12 episodes of DS9, you're really missing out. The start of the show was overall not very interesting. The end was a letdown for me, but some people liked it a lot. The middle 3 seasons, with the Dominion and the war arcs, are some of the best TV I've ever seen.

RR: See above. I've heard so many stories of people giving DS9 a chance, and then they love it when they watch it. I agree with your sentiment but I hope they don't take it too far. I don't want Ent to get a holodeck at any point, and I want them to continue to avoid using transporters. I love how humans are not as advanced as everyone else, and I don't want them to lose that.

Treeman: Yes, but Enterprise has a lot of promise and has delivered so far, IMHO.

Vescey: I agree a lot with you, but I'm more optimistic that they will take the effort of using the Andorians and create a DS9-ish arc with them and the formation of the Federation. If they want to do more with the Futureguy, I hope they don't come up w/ anything screwy. Then again, we are talking about Berman here
