I signed up for a dovebid account, but I don't think I'll be bidding. The dovebid process sounds like a pain and I really don't need anything... this auction is so widely known that there will be a lot of folks bidding and alot of people buying huge lots... but it will be interesting to hear if anyone went or got a good deal.
I just got back from the auction. I have never been around bigger idiots in my life. Those plasma wall televisions went for about $7-8K's each! These people could have gone to Best Buy or Home Theater Store and could have gotten a newer model for cheaper. Not to mention a warranty!
dude, tell me about it... I didn't go to this auction, but I've been to other auctions where they are selling a company's inventory and the people that bid are just ridiciulous... maybe they are 'plants' to jack up the price... jerks.
Man dont even get me started. Here is just one example. Check out their Lot number 67-69. They are Pioneer 40" Plasma Monitors. Model number PDP-V402. At the auction, I believe it sold for EIGHT FREAKIN GRAND! Now check out this Pioneer 50" PDP503CMX. http://www.bestbuyplasma.com/Plasma/popups/product.asp?sku=PDP503CMX Its around $6,000. I've seen this one for as cheap as $5300! So the idiot who bought this at the auction: -Paid about $2000 more -Got a smaller TV -Got an older model -Got a used TV -Does not get any sort of warranty. All the plasma tv's the auction had could have been found on the internet for around 2 grand!
Yes, but this television has the taint of massive corporate corruption on it. You can't get that at Best Buy!
my partner and i purchased some office furniture from a big bankruptcy auction here about 6-8 months ago...the prices were quite reasonable. this is just being overblown because of the national attention of the Enron story...these are going almost like sick commemorative souvenir items.
One of my friends gave me a playboy video called "The Women of Enron" as a gag gift because I interned there 5 years ago. I think they were all secretaries but it was hilarious seeing old chicks pose nude for the first time. The finest one was dating this little bald guy who looked like moby if he was a midget. That dude must be a woody allen style player.
I wonder if Matrass Mac is going to buy the Big crooked E, and put it in his store. His store on 6006 I-45. He can put it next to his sports memorabilia, and his Princess Diana jewels, and the big dinosaur.
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/front/1590113 Crooked E sells for $44,000! overpriced just like the TV's!! The 200-pound icon proved irresistible to the owner of Microcache Computer store on the Gulf Freeway, who paid $44,000. Jimmy Luu, sent by his boss to buy the sign, said he was given explicit marching orders regarding the sign that once stood outside a downtown satellite office. "He said, `Just do anything to get it,'" Luu told a crush of reporters who surrounded him shortly after his bid was gaveled out in a packed Astrodome hotel ballroom.
Today's 15-inch flat panel monitors (NEC) went for around 350. I believe the 18 inch (NEC, IBM, SUN) went for around 600.
This is why I hate auction sites now. There's always clueless people running around thinking they got a great deal because they beat Best Buy's price on something. I remember Ubid used to be an awesome place to get ridiculous deals on new merchandise. Now people overpay for everything. I once got a $3500 laptop for $1300 on there. I didn't even bother bidding on this auction because I had a feeling this is how it would turn out...
One or two were new and in their box. The big majority of them were "used" and sold "as is". These tv's could have been had for around $2500 max with a careful search on the internet. People read the sticker price of $15,000 to $20,000 and got excited when they were able to get em for only $8000. These dorks dont realize those sticker prices are over a year old. Plasma tv's have been dropping in price like crazy since then. And like I said, one can get a brand new tv and a better model for a cheaper price. These tv's did not even have warranties in most cases.
Where can you get them for $2500? I told my friend about the auction and he said that's what he would be willing to spend on one.
Here is a BRAND NEW one for 3500 on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1382380557 A 50" BRAND NEW one for $3200: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1382072153 Another 42" for $3200: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1382072153 Another one for $3200: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1382072153 Check out Bestbuy, all new plasma tvs from $3500 to $6000: http://www.bestbuyplasma.com/Plasma/index.asp Last night I had done some more research and actually had found a couple of used ones for around $2500. The most important reason NOT to have gotten those tv's for what they went for at the auction are WARRANTIES. A used high end product that is "sold as is" is highly risky. I also said $2500 is what these tvs are worth because they are: -Used -Older generation (and since this is a relatively new technology it is susceptible to malfunctioning) -No warranties Just wait till Christmas and you will see even more price drops. Next year it is expected to get much much much more cheaper.
