Elton John Says Eminem Is a 'Hendrix' By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: April 7, 2005 Filed at 4:54 p.m. ET NEW YORK (AP) -- Elton John says that Eminem is on par with Jimi Hendrix and Mick Jagger. In the new issue of Rolling Stone, the rapper is listed in the magazine's second ``Immortals'' edition, featuring another 50 of the greatest figures of rock `n' roll with appreciations written by other artists. In his immortalizing of Eminem, John writes that he got goose bumps when he first rehearsed with him for their performance at the 2001 Grammy Awards. ``From the start, I've always admired Eminem's thinking,'' John writes. ``That's the reason I wanted to appear on the Grammys with him when I was asked, despite all the nonsense talked about his being homophobic. ``Let the Boy Georges and the George Michaels of the world get up in a twist about it if they don't have the intelligence to see his intelligence.'' Other contributors include Dave Matthews writing on Radiohead, Trey Anastasio on Frank Zappa, Beck on Hank Williams, David Bowie on Nine Inch Nails and Mos Def on Miles Davis. The original top 50 ``Immortals'' were listed by Rolling Stone in 2004. Topping the ranks were the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley. ____________________________________________________ Here is the link to the Rolling Stone "The Immortals" 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/7235505
Elton John has not lost his mind. The credit he gives Eminem is accurate; I would just insert rap/music in general in for Rock & Roll.
Looking at their top 100 artists, I am absolutely appalled by the omission of Pink Floyd. The Byrds??!! WTF? And as much as I love Radiohead, if it wasn't for Floyd, Radiohead would probably still be doing albums like "Pablo Honey". Rolling Stone...
RAP FORMULA: Music - melody - instrument performance - harmony - key changes + (babbling lyrics x 10) = rap -- droxford
These are the people who voted the Top 100 Artists: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/7235503 I agree Pink Floyd belongs somewhere on the list, but The Byrds also belong there too. Very influential band. Hell, they influenced Bob Dylan.
I will be interested to see how people that are growing up in the hip hop culture talk 20-30 years from now as far as the great musical artists. People like Eminem and other good hip hop acts don't get the credit they really deserve because a bunch of stiff white guys that sit around smoking mary jane and listening to their old "records" refuse to acknowledge that rap and hip hop is a true genre of music. I would argue that rap & hip hop is the most influential music in today's pop culture, but these old white stiffs (for the most part), simply can't accept it. It is too early to call Eminem a "Hendrix," IMO...but if you don't believe that Eminem is easily one of the most influential, talented, and important musical artists of the past 10-15 years, then I think you're crazy. And dont say "well, if he's so great, that just reflects how crappy music is today." Go put on your Led Zeppelin albums and grow your hair out a little further.
Eminem is very intelligent. If you arent into rap, I can see how you wouldnt know this, but if you are, its clear that Eminem is a bright artist. Thats why Im kinda impressed that Elton picked up on this.
I guess, Bob, although I thought I remembered reading somewhere that Dylan never really cared too much for the Byrds (but I may very well be getting that sentiment confused with Batman Jones' feelings about the Byrds). Regardless, 45, I think is too high for them, and U2 is definitely ranked too high (they should be on the list but in the 20's??). But like I said before, this is Rolling Stone - I have seen some of their other lists like their 500 greatest albums of all-time and needless to say I am glad that I didn't waste any money to buy that issue or any of their issues, for that matter.
Technically, shouldn't it be: Music - (melody + instrument performance + harmony + key changes) + (babbling lyrics x 10) + excessive repetition + borderline plagarism + beatbox = rap
When Dylan heard The Byrds version of "Mr. Tamborine Man," he (for the most part) put the acoustic guitar away and went "Electric"
Eminem's early stuff was cool and he is great when drops a short verse in a guest spot, but his albums taken as a whole – suck.
Manny you need to step back! Don't be dissin' the Byrds! The Byrds were amazing band. They weren't called the American Beatles for nothing. Them and Buffalo Springfield.
I was actually thinking about Radiohead, today...to you Radiohead fans what cds do you recommend me to listen to? I heard a few of their songs on the radio but cant really get into them. Would listening to one of their cds all the way through help?
Get songs that aren't on the radio. "Talk Show Host," "Street Spirit," "Sulk," "High and Dry," "The National Anthem," "Karma Police," it's grand stuff. Will likely leave you wanting more.
