Ellen DeGeneres to replace Paula Abdul on American Idol

    LOS ANGELES – Ellen DeGeneres is dancing her way into the fourth judge's seat on "American Idol." Fox announced Wednesday the talk show host and comedian, who admittedly has no formal music experience other than a passion for tunes, would join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi for the ninth season starting in January.

    The announcement all but seals the departure of Paula Abdul, who announced she was quitting the show amid a contract dispute in July.

    DeGeneres told her talk show audience in an episode scheduled to air Thursday that she would not abandon her Emmy-winning chatfest, but would have "a day job and a night job."

    "The times we're living in," she quipped, "we're all doing that."

    Abdul had been replaced by a succession of guest judges as "American Idol" started next season's auditions. Among them: Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Shania Twain — but not the 51-year-old DeGeneres.

    "Hopefully, I'm the people's point of view because I'm just like you," DeGeneres said on her show. "I sit at home and I watch it, and I don't have that technical ... I'm not looking at it in a critical way from the producer's mind. I'm looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person."

    Not bad. She was a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance a while back, and she was trying too hard to be funny. If she can reel that in, which I think she can, then she'll be a good addition.

    She'll add nothing of value to the contestants and she doesn't exactly fill the role of the crazy lady since she's moderately intelligent. Not too stoked for this replacement.

    I think she can relate to more people in the sense of music and her opinion probably wont be too objective. I like the choice.

    as far as entertainment purposes, she's a great addition. she's very likeable and funny which will add humor to the show. Yet, she has no experience in the music industry. how will her opinion be valued? She said she wants to be the voice which represents those of us that watch from home, like herself. in the end its a tv show and thats what they're looking for, to add to the audience.

    I've never watched American Idol in my life, but this change would probably make me more likely to catch an episode at some point. It's hard not to like Ellen DeGeneres.

    The only time I ever viewed anything on American idol.. was when I came up to a girl auditioning with an impressive rendition of phantom of the opera.. while channel surfing..

    i for one like this and think she will make the show more entertaining, though i don't know how much (if any) she bring as far as being a fair judge of talent.

    having said that, fox should prepare itself for a further ratings drop. there are people who will now skip the show because she is on it.

    I only know her from her standup comedy, where she comes off as very likeable. Didn't watch her tv shows.
