Either start Lin, or bring in a new starting PG, Bev ain't cuttin' it.

This author is rather biased, but I guess he never claimed otherwise. Rather than nitpick his article, I will just say that Lin is indeed a very good PG. I think he had a few more evident flaws last yr, but this season has really improved on a lot of them. His defense has gotten better, his shooting stroke (esp. from behind the arc) is much improved, etc. Only thing left is his TOs, but on a team built like the Rockets, I don't expect that to change much...and I don't really care if it does or not (look at OKC!).

Lin is a victim of his fame. Linsanity made him famous but is baggage...bad baggage. People don't see Lin or his skills or how nice of a guy he is; they see his baggage. They see Linsanity. For some, that is criticizing everything perceived to be negative directed toward Lin (ex: "omg McHale stared at Jeremy for an extra second! HE HATES HIM AND WILL NEVER LET HIM GROW AS A PLAYER!"), while for others, it is a constant bashing of Lin for nothing Lin did (it is more an overreaction to LOFs and the first quote). I feel for the guy because he's really the victim of it all...

...but then again, he's also making tens of millions playing a game so I'm sure his life is still pretty swell.

 

Yes, that is why Beverley starts over Lin. Because he was a higher draft pick and has more experience. It is also why Morris kept starting over Parsons for so long. Can't sit a first round draft pick, after all.

 

I think the Dallas game was the only one where his minutes were markedly cut down.

 

I agree with all this, but I think the order should be:

Howard -> Harden -> Lin -> Parsons

But the system still has some kinks to be worked out. I like both McHale and Lin, I think they will get things worked out eventually.

 

This isn't about Lin "paying his dues". The short leash has more to do with giving Harden free reign, and preparing Bev to be a legit starting PG. Lin playing well actually raises more questions than answers for the Rockets brass.

I suppose my argument about "paying dues" is a little off considering that Parsons was a nobody that somehow became the 3rd best scorer on the team.

There's just something off about the Lin dynamic. Seems bizarre that every game he needs to prove himself. For a guy that will automatically put up 13-14 points a game for you on any given night and markedly make players like Terrence Jones better, it's strange that he gets talked about and treated like a walk-on trying to make the team. the NBA is a game of rhythm...longer you're in the game, the better you get a feel for the tempo. We're paying the dude a lot of money, why don't we treat him like it?

Yeah he shoots 41% from the field. He's a great 3 point shooter though. He was the "3 point specialist I qualified"

I think this illustrates the power of perception though. The numbers don't lie, but we see him hit the big 3 point shots (about 3 a game too!) and just assume he is a great shooter.

I am not saying the author was right or wrong but would want to provide a background on the author's mindset. His past articles are titled:

It is difficult to take an opinion based article seriously when there is definitely a huge bias.

 

To the coaches, Lin is like broccoli... something they don't like, but know deep down is good for them.

 

Really in my opinion Bev gets the start because he pressures the pg non stop on D and he's a safer play than Lin. With our current starting lineup with dwight, harden, and parsons we have in theory have enough offensive firepower where the pg possession should simply play a smaller role on offensive to allow the main 3 to go to work.

if lin is more consistent with ball protection i think McHale would for sure use him over beverly to start. Otherwise his high risk high reward style does make more sense off the bench where there isn't anyone else that can create for others.

 

Lining time.

 

Um, you have to realize that the 41% you're so keyed in on accounts for layups, floaters, etc. If you're hitting 40%+ from deep then you're a good shooter. Period. FG% for Point Guards are usually low anyways. So according to your logic, Stephen Curry isn't a good shooter either? Like, come on.

 

Isaiah Thomas was hardly "average" in his 1st two years

Even more impressive, he did this coming off the bench (half the season) behind Tyreke Evans and Marcus Thornton.
