"Some players need a coach who's going to be a father figure and some need a coach that chews them up and gets them focused. It looks like he will be the one who lets you know what you did wrong and he doesn't care who you are and that's exactly what we need." -- F Eddie Griffin on new Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy Says a lot when the players feel this way too. I hope Steve and Cat get on board..... Sounds like EG is ready to respond to some tough love.... DDLink
Saying is one thing. Doing is another. I'll be convinced when I see a modicum of improvement in EG's game...something I didn't see at all last season.
I really hope he does improve. I think Eddie could be such a great player. If he could be the player I hope he will be the rox wont need to pick up a FA. They will have all the players they need. And it would be sweeter that way; not like the Lakers always stealing good players away from other teams.
Just my guess, but I get the feeling those comments are referring to the guards who ignored him or waived him out of the paint when he got inside position early in the season last year.
Griffin's shyness can deceive one into thinking he doesn't really care or know whats up but that quote right there shows his intelligence.
lol...I agree! I'm in awe! Griffin actually said that?!? Man...well hopefully JVG is telling Eddie what he is doing wrong and what to change instead of just saying Keep on practicing! Confidence! Relax! You'll do better next time! Who knows...maybe he is talking about Francis and Mobley last year just dribbling out shotclocks all year last year and not passing. I just hope he is stronger and is more confident and makes his open shots! His post game...is hopeless.
eg might not show expressions most of the time and his shyness conceived his wisdom. but this quote right here shows how intelligent he is.
if i remember right alot of people here thought that eddie stood, by far, to gain the most from jvg as coach. this quote seems to be inline with that. griffin shows all the excitement of tim duncan. no i'm not comparing the two as players but it's just that i don't think his lack of emotion means he's not trying his best. at this point however his skill-level doesn't make up for his sleepy-looking face.
oh come on pippendagimp, eddie griffin is now calling out the guards. in what world would he have room to talk? he certainly didn't get in great shape, work real hard on his game, prove he could bang in the post, prove he could produce, or play as hard as the guards. now he's calling them out for ignoring him when he had the SECOND HIGHEST SHOTS PER MINUTE on the team last year? it's one thing to talk about getting the ball to yao, who can also do other things beside shoot, but to talk of ignoring eddie when all he brings in the post is shooting and he does that poorly while the guards are clearly better options and he still got a lot of shots? not every comment in the world is directed at our guards being the most worthless players to ever lace them up. back to the topic, i love the comment. while actions mean everything, if eddie is gonna be improved from someone getting on him and even he recognizes it, then freakin' great. i wanna hold onto this guy b/c he and yao closing off the paint for years would be amazing. if he can add everything else and live up to his potential then damn we will be good.
francis4prez... You're welcome to disagree, but I do remember Eddie voicing his displeasure in interviews about being ignored in the post last year, especially early in the season when he was working for position or not getting the pass on the roll part of a pnr. As far as whether he's been working hard on his game or can produce anything in the paint, I'm not really sure either way. He does have decent post moves IMO but simply lacks the bulk to get good position against most opponents. He is only 21 yrs old as well so he is still growing. Anyways, when he has managed to get decent position in the paint during his career thus far, I don't think he's really been given a chance to show what he can do.
Can Eddie Griffin be next J O'Neal? Very possible under JVG's guidance. He will teach EG to be tough on the board, tough on defense, and bang in low-post. Also, get rid of that flat jumper.
i still say he's had enough chance to show it wasn't in him. or at least as much chance as one can afford when trying to make the playoffs and already trying to work another, even bigger potential guy, into the mix. sometimes life ain't fair, but eddie can't expect more shots than he was already getting if he's not producing for a team trying to make the playoffs. i still hold out hope one day he'll learn about this thing called arc and then we'll start seeing those 5 foot turnarounds go in instead of rattle out b/c they're so flat. also applies to his jumper. my main point is eddie griffin has far more to worry about eddie griffin than he does cuttino or steve and thus it is most likely he was referring to himself, and if not, he has no room to talk.
it CAN talk!!!! but id much rather hear mo taylor speak, any quotes from him about the upcoming season?
He speaks??? It's almost as if I'm watching E.T. and he just said "Ouch." LOL. Well Eddie, you can talk the talk but I'm not giving you ANY respect until you walk the walk. Best of luck this year.
I don't think Eddie is calling out ther guards...hes just pointing out the obvious...Rudy wasn't very tough on his players last season. As far as improvement goes, I think we'll see a better Eddie Griffin this year. His shot wasn't flat his rookie season. I hope that he's worked hard to break his bad habit. Being the third or fourth option, he'll have to make the most of his touches. Another thing...do you guys see how fit Mo Tay looked? If JVG lights a fire under him to get agressive on the boards, he could very easily starts. We all knew that jump hook was money last season. I'm so excited about this season!!!!
EG is a puppy dog. The last to years he has been hangin' in the yard with the other mutts trying to be one of the boys. VG will chain a tire on the rim around his neck and train him to be the champion Pit that he is. Kind of strange that Larry Smith was not able to do this. But I think VG can. EG, hopefully, will have to earn his starting position, particularly as I have heard that MoT and Cato have actually trained this summer.
I've heard similar things about mo t and cato....what i'm worried about are the two "superstars" we have in the back court.
