Nice little article, reiterating comments said before but can't hurt to add it for material to read on here: http://www.economist.com/opinion/PrinterFriendly.cfm?story_id=11791539 It's McDonald's fault that I'm fat It's the government's fault that I'm uneducated It's the Middle Easterner's fault that oil prices are high It's China's fault that my kid is stupid It's Wal-Mart's fault that I'm addicted to cheap crap It's the bank's fault that I can't pay my loans As long as America continues to practice institutionalized racism, it will never ever reach its potential. By preventing more qualified and better minorities reaching top positions, they are merely preventing the best people from reaching their full potential. As a result, America as a country loses. America has not done a great job integrating all the minorities into this society. Even 6th generation Asian Americans are still considered foreigners by many, while some dudes fly got off the boat from UK a year ago is now more "American". It is yet another barrier for minorities to cross over in order to participate in the ultimate American dream. Outside racism, there is also the issue of ugly pop culture. In the America culture, being smart is to be made fun of. People are constantly ripping on Engineers and other smart people because they are not "cool". Well guess what? Those are the people that actually advance the nation in development. It sure is not the people that can throw a ball 100 yards or some dudes that can dunk a basketball 360 degrees. America got its priorities all ****ed up. To this day, over 50% of engineers etc are foreign born in America. American colleges are producing less engineers than ever. These are not good trends for the future. Another ugly fact is most Americans don't know **** about anyone outside of USA and they don't care. Average American is as ignorant as the rock outside my door. By not learning from other countries for best practices, America as a country again loses. Anyone ever seen this video? Watch the video above and you see what I mean. On top of this, wealth distribution in America is totally out of whack. I believe top 1% richest America owns more than 50% of wealth and top 5% richest Americans owns something like 90% of wealth in this country. USA has 5% of world population but uses 25% of world's oil resources. I really don't want to hear any more blames on anyone until the problems at home are fixed first.
Sorry to tell you this but nerdy engineers have never and will never be considered cool no matter how much you wish. America's fine. The housing buble was a scam and everyone knew it. Bush's war is a legit complaint. But if gas prices weren't so high I seriously doubt anyone would care. so I blame the car companies for not selling electric cars.
Why study to become an engineer when most likely your job will be shipped out to someone makin 1/10th as much as you.
Yeah, only in America do people blame others for their troubles. For confirmation see the impoverished in the middle east, and listen to the Immans blaming the evil west instead of their rulers who keep all the oil profits.... DD
Forreal Serious. . . These type of things would lead you to believe that If you chill in France,England,India, etc and randomly walk up to folx they will be philosophizing about plato while splitting the aton with their mind power Rocket River
