Sold an item on ebay for my gf. Paypal emailed me saying it's an e-check, which I've never even heard of. Said it'll take 5-7 days to process it and verifiy it. I was hoping to mail this thing out for her right away and get immediate funds through paypal. This sucks. Basically I have a bunch of red flags going off. 1. The e-check 2. The buyer has 0 rating. 3. The buyer is asking me to send it to a different address than that verified on paypal / ebay.
From ebay: Since it can take several days for an eCheck to clear, an eCheck is not a form of immediate payment. In some instances the buyer is unaware they have selected an e-check. For instance, if a seller has been making payments successfully in the past without using an e-check and then they make a payment that is an e-check, they may blame the seller. Often the buyer does not realize their debit/credit card on file with PayPal has expired. A credit card must be active on a PayPal account in order for an instant transfer to occur. Sellers are instructed not to ship until an e-check has cleared because it is possible that an e-check will be declined before being deposited into the seller’s PayPal account.
Do not send to a different address than their confirmed one on Paypal, otherwise you are not protected at all. Also, e-checks are like regular checks in that they can be cancelled before they clear so you should wait to send it out, if at all.
So if it's sent to his "new" address, I lose any protection i had through paypal? He better get that new one verified. Or is it too late? Should I cancel it?
1st. You have the right to wait until the payment clears. 2nd. Send him an message saying the new address better be verified or you aren't sending the item and you will refund his money. 3rd. If the money clears and is in your paypal account and he gets the address verified, then send the item. You'll be fully protected and good to go.
Quick google search, his new address is a dorm at Maryland University. Googled his name and the university and found his face book. he's from Nairobi, Kenya.....at least I'm not having to send it there.
Cool, Thanks. Just sent an email requesting he get that new address verified. I wasn't sure if that was possible since he already purchased the item.
If he doesn't get it verified for whatever reason, you can get your eBay fees waived through eBay customer service. Just chat with them and tell them the situation.
This is completely normal. Just don't ship it to a non confirmed address and you'll be fine. Sounds OK to me.
e-checks are legit. Just wait until its cleared and you have the funds then ship it out. Usually takes 3 days or there should be an estimated clearing date.
I work with eBay orders every day. Echecks happen and are annoying. We also have at least one address change per day, if you have their request to change from the same email as their paypal address then you have proof of that request and should be ok
Alright, might have to go that route. The guy emailed me back, saying he hasn't had the account for 90 days so he can't get the new address verified (he just moved to college). Meh. So sounds like the best thing to do is NOT complete this transaction, contact ebay CS.
Little confused, are you saying that if he's emailing me with the same email as the paypal account (where he requested that I mail it to another address?) If so, he has been emailing me from the same email that's connected to his paypal account. REP, if possible to everyone that has chimed in.
Well we ship out a lot of product and 75% of our transactions go through paypal, we'd prefer to use google checkout but paypal is a necessary evil at this point in time for global e-commerce. But basically yes, as long as you have an email from your buyer's email stating the address change... as long as that email came from the same email address that is linked to his paypal account, you have proof that he requested the address change if a dispute comes up. At any rate, do not ship it out until the e-check clears. In my experience it usually takes 4 business days at minimum.
They will always tell you it will take a lot longer than it does. Most online payment processing companies tell you it will take weeks when in fact most of it is done in just a single week. They're just covering themselves in case something happens and they quoted you a time less than what it normally should. I'd ship it to his verified address, if he's a kid off to college, the verified address should be a parent's. At which point, leave it up them to get it to the kid. I'm of the belief, once you get the money, don't go out of your way to give it back, protect yourself first.
