http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5679744.html A minor earthquake occurred about 95 miles south-southwest of Austin early this morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center. The quake was detected at 4:51 a.m. and registered 3.7 on the 10-point Richter Scale, used to measure the energy of earthquakes. The epicenter of the quake was pegged at 10 miles south of Poth in Wilson County, and 12 miles west-northwest of Kenedy in Karnes County, the center reported on its Web site. The Karnes County Sheriff's Department has received calls from people who felt the quake but no reports of injuries or damage, a dispatcher said this morning. The earthquake center says a magnitude-4.0 earthquake typically can be felt as far as 60 miles from its epicenter. Earthquakes are fairly uncommon in Texas. A minor earthquake was felt by some people in Amarillo on March 30, 2002. The Amarillo area recorded seven minor earthquakes in 2000, records show. The Associated Press contributed to this story. kevin.moran@chron.com WTF an Earthquake?? Does insurance cover that here?
Granted, I pitched a nice slow curve ball right over the plate, hoping the more witty members of the board would have fun with it. So I really can't complain about the replies. Just an FYI for the future, this might not be the best comeback on a mb where you don't know the circumstances of the person you are replying to. I'm just saying.... Carry on.
A 3.7 is really nothing, right? I was in the last major Texas earthquake (a 5.7 in Alpine, TX) and I slept through it. There was notable damage, though.
Seems like I've read before there's a major fault line that runs through Texas...and that geologists traditionally have been surprised that there's not more significant earthquake activity here. Anyone else ever read that, or am I dreaming it?
it's God's way of punishing the city of san antonio for tanking the 1996-97 season in order to land duncan. i, for one, applaud the Big Guy's retribution.
Aren't the Hill Country area near SA & Austin caused by big earthquakes from the past? I thought I heard of that fault line in Texas also but I don't recall how major it is..
Funny to see a longhorn fan write anything with the word "stoops" Now only if Bob had a brother named Neil.
Thank you Captain Serious. I suppose you might be the kind of guy that would kill a guy for bustin a no harm mama joke on message board. I'll be sure to watch it from now on.
It has been my understanding that there is a fault in Texas, but it is considered a "relatively stable" one....as in it doesnt move much. I know one thing, they certainly don't happen often enough to buy insurance for it....do they even offer that in Texas? much less down here on the floating landmass that is the Texas Gulf Coast. EDIT: Technical information on it http://folkworm.ceri.memphis.edu/recenteqs/Quakes/us2008qnat.html
