Guys I am biased here, I loved the guy. But a friend of mines dad who wasn't even a NASCAR fan spent yesterday outside Dale Earnhardt Inc (aka the Garage-mah-hal to NASCAR fans). He said something I never thought of. Basically it was the they way he died (live on national tv), who he was (a sports legend), and how he died (last lap of the biggest race protecting his son and teammate) that Dale's death may be the "greatest" in US history. More remembered than JFK, Princess Di, etc. I tend to agree, but I am biased. I am 29 so I wasn't around for JFKs but I know Princess Di didn't effect me at all. Then again it may be more of a regional thing (Southern US), but I know even here in COlumbus, Ohio a radio station is having a ceremony on saturday.
"Greatest death in US history"? Sorry, but I think that is a pretty idiotic thought, and this is a ludicrous topic for a thread. Just my opinion. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
If the topic is so idiotic then don't read it or respond . Your best posting is when you whine about W anyhow. ------------------ "UNBEATABLE"
4chuckie, I can tell you that you're biased, but then you alread said so. There's no way Earnhardt's death is more tragic or will be remembered more than JFK's. I doubt it will even outweigh Princess Di's in the US. Worldwide, it's not close to either. Heck, I've got one that blows all of those away: Elvis. ------------------ "Ive seen more class at a Pig Humpin Contest ." -- moestavern19 makes headlines again, and in the process leaves little doubt as to what Saturday nights in his hometown of Lompoc, California are like.
I doubt that Earnhardt's death will be the most remembered in SPORTS! Roberto Clemente will be remembered more. The tragic Marshall football team plane crash will be remembered more. Earnhardt was a legend in NASCAR, and his death was tragic, but it will not be one of the most remembered in US History. ------------------ Dream a deadly Dream. . . I'm not glad he's dead or anything but I personally don't have much sympathy for those who gamble with their lives for the sake of sport or entertainment, especially if they have a family. not to mention this sport encourages reckless and dangerous behavior in drivers on our public streets (those Westheimer drag races for example). ------------------ [This message has been edited by outlaw (edited February 22, 2001).]
Outlaw - Those westhimer races are pretty bad ass sometimes. I dont have my car hooked up with anything but I still can beat anyone on the road. No one can beat me, I didnt race that much but the past months since i have bought a new car , people come and talk trash trying to race. I do it sometimes if im in the mood of kicking ass. But after what I heard today from one of my close friends in Florida, I might stop. My friend was driving with his girlfriend and this guy wanted to race him on the street in tampa. He said to him no and the other driver cut him off and he lost control over his car. His car got messed up and he has alot of bruises. He is lucky he wasnt killed. ------------------ "Break off the block like Maurice Green" --- Steve Francis President of the Moochie Norris fan club.
In late 1972, in Managua, Nicaragua(a central American country) a half-white, half-hispanic newborn infant nearly lost his life in a vicious Earthquake. His mother remarkably covered him before a section of the ceiling came down on him. If it wasn't for her heroics, the baby would have surely died. The family needed supplies, and here in the U.S., was the great Roberto Clemente on television stating how he would personally fly to the country since he himself was hispanic (Arguably, the greatest latin player of all time - from Dominican Republic). As the story goes, the plane goes down (supplies and all) and Clemente dies in a most disheartening way - trying to help these people. I guess this sports death is most touching because that little infant is me. ------------------ Sometimes you gotta do the next best thing!
Earnhardt's death isn't anymore tragic then an average person's death. I'm probably gonna get flamed, but celebrities dying doesn't make anything more tragic. The cop that got killed during the drug bust was prolly more tragic. I don't want to offend you NASCAR fans, but Dale was a human being just like the rest of us. ------------------ "Roses are red. Violets are blue. I'm a schizophrenic and so am I."
I have to agree gr8-1. I think it hits people harder with celebrities because we are bombarded with them constantly. And is that true ROXRAN!? Man. ------------------ Dream a deadly Dream. . .
I'm sorry but people who street race are just plain stupid and are looking to stare death right in the face. Do you know how many people die from street racing? And for what? They always think they are in control until they slam into another car head on or slam into a tree. Then, they just leave a bunch of people shaking their heads at how stupid street racing kids can be. If you like to play games with your life and are aware that you could die, then feel free to street race all you want. However, if you just want to drive fast, then go play a freaking video game for God's sake. Surf ------------------
Yeah I agree Racing is very childish and dangerous. I do it only because some people on the road get me mad. I knew before I got my car that this would happen. I just hit the gas and I fly past them, then go on driving normal. Seriously for you people that are addicted to it, dont do it, its very dangerous. Especially young teens that get license, I hate when they are on the road and they are racing. Thats some crazy ****. ------------------ "Break off the block like Maurice Green" --- Steve Francis President of the Moochie Norris fan club.
I don't like making personal attacks and I will admit that I am not mourning the death of Earnhardt, but OUTLAW your statemate about the dangers of a reckless lifestyle for the sake of sport or entertainment, makes me wonder about you as a person. Have you ever been passionate about ANYTHING in your life, because if you have been you would understand why Earnhardt continued to race and push himself to the limits! Racing was not a SPORT to Dale Earnhardt is was Dale Earnhardt. ------------------ I am an invisible man.
ok whatever. you can be passionate about life without trying to cheat death on a regular basis. i'm not saying people shouldn't be allowed to race. I'm just saying don't expect me to think of it as a tradegy if they die from it. ------------------
I agree Outlaw; It wasn't a tragedy and I don't think Dale Earnhardt would have thought it was either. His fans elevate it to tragedy because they care about him. I think if Dale Earnhardt could have chosen the way in which he would died this would have been it. But it is imortant to understand that, to Dale Earnhardt, not racing would been a kind of death to him, so in point of fact he wasn't trying to "cheat death" he was trying to continue to live. ------------------ I am an invisible man.
Rocksmillenium: yep, true. My Mom is certainly O.k. with bruises at the time, and we were there visiting family on vacation (before the country went to hell with the revolutionary war and the president getting killed.) We traveled a lot at that time - even though I was a baby! ------------------ Sometimes you gotta do the next best thing!
Man ROXRAN that is amazing. That goes to show even more that war is a waste and is senseless. I have even more respect for Clemente then I did before! ------------------ Dream a deadly Dream. . .
