Why do we care since we're all buying PS3 for Blu-Ray? ;)

Question for you RC , how does the MS Xbox(now) or XBox 360(in the future) do hi-def games if it is using a conventional 480i DVD player? Is it all through upconversion? I haven't bothered to study up on this but my understanding is you need a hi-def player to read a hi-def DVD in its native format(720p, 1080i, etc). So, are all MS games artificially enhanced hi-def starting from 480i? If so, then why do some games support...say...720p...while others don't support anything but 480p. I'm missing something...maybe a brain.

Well, Ronaldinho looks as ugly on Xbox 360 as he does in real life.

Those first (for obvious reasons) and last Madden shots looked bad. This is football so why does everything have such a "clean" look to it. I'd like to see more grittiness please.

Well, I wasn't going to but Madden for the 360, since I already have it for the XBOX, but that article sold me.

First off, I just want to say that I'm not completely familiar with how hi-def games work, especially on the Xbox.

The way I understand it, it is a choice for the developer as to what the native resolution of their games will be. Most current-gen games are 480i/p since anything above that would take a large chunk of processing power; some devs would rather use that power for AI, graphics, animation, etc., instead of just making the game natively 720p or whatever. The Xbox GPU is a little better at producing HD-resolutions than any of the other consoles, but it still wasn't really that practical.

The Xbox 360 has been a little more confusing, although it started off simple. At first, MS said that every game must have a native resolution of 720p; I think this is still the case, but there has been some conflicting evidence recently, which I didn't really get into. I think the gist of it was that some 360 games were being shown at lower resolutions (1024x576 for example) w/o jaggies, and some 1280x720 screens of the same game had noticeable jaggies. This may suggest that developers may be able to create games at lower resolutions that scale up to the required resolution, instead of actually being created at that resolution natively.

AFAIK, the fact that it uses DVD has nothing to do with it really, unless you start including hi-def prerendered movies on games (should still be doable on DVD with WMV compression). It is really up to the hardware and the developers as to whether or not to make the game natively 720p (or even 1080p, although that is a little tough to do practically on the 360 ).

I hope that answered you question. If not, let me know and I'll try to see if I can learn more about the topic. I usually just read up on the stuff that interests me, but if there is something else that any of you guys would like answered that I don't know the answer to, I try to keep any eye out on it.
