Wanted to get everyone thoughts on this. With all the hype of us going after Howard are we setting ourselves up for another Tmac? Great player at first then Cancer in the end? Both were drafted out of High School, both extremely gifted, both have back issues and both nut jobs?
He wasn't a cancer. His knee was screwed up and the Rockets were hoping to stick some other team with the bill. When that predictably didn't work, they put him down and rendered him down for glue. If Howard as a Rocket shows as much commitment as McGrady did and stays relatively healthy, we'll be doing great. If he dares to get injured though, there'll be trouble.
from other posts in the Dwight Howard thread and this Gem/5 star thread. wadero has hit my **** list.
I would love to have a young TMac all over again. Hell, I'd take Yao Ming all over again, too even knowing the injury risks. The team didn't build them a good enough supporting cast before they got hurt, but if given the chance, I'd take on that challenge again.
I have no problems with Dwight Howard the player, but I do have problem with self-righteous, vindictive, selfish off the court , spotlight hungry diva. Did I mention he threw his coach, teammates, and organization under the bus? What he has did is 50x worse than anything LeBron James did? One guy is somewhat hated on this board, while the other is becoming a God of sorts (even though, he probably doesn't want to play here, especially not long term). I ABHOR the idea of renting any player, unless it will lead to a championship. What makes it worse, is Houston trying to lobby for a player who has made somewhat of statement that he doesn't want to play for such and such teams. He could've easily went to Golden State or Houston, last season. Though, I'm guessing someone veto those trades ... I wonder who? He said he wanted to play in LA or New York. This business about being able to trade him before the deadline is somewhat silly, when he can simply walk away from a contract at the end of the season. Regardless, that's like grabbing a pot of gold, only to have it turn into a barrel of toxic waste. I honestly cannot see any well-adjusted team realistically trading Howard for a handful of quality players, only to have Howard walk away, next summer. If Houston by some stretch of the imagination were able to grab Howard, how do they keep him interested in the city, especially Deron Williams signs with another team. You are trying to appease a guy who is trying to become a MEGA-STAR and wants to do it on a bigger stage than Orlando.
If you were to tell me that Howard will give us 4 years of superstar play, and 2 years of albatross contract(final year + 5yr max extension=6yrs signed), I will take that in a heartbeat. No questions asked. I will take the gamble that the Rockets can form a good enough team around him to compete.
This was ignored in the "ESPN:Rockets Talking... " thread (whatever the hell the name of the thread is). Perhaps someone will chime in here. Does anyone really have a clue as to what condition Dwight's back is in? I'm excited about the prospect of getting him, if we're able to manage that, but there would be hell to pay if we went to all the trouble of trading several of our players, and picks, for the two top ten picks, made the trade, with who knows which players going to Orlando along with the two picks, and he failed his physical. The chaos would be rediculous.
Nah, they are very different types. Howard could be built around, Tmac...what you can say about him? .
