What's up everyone? I am looking to buy a DVD recorder in order to convert my vhs videos to DVD. I have researched them on-line and have a limited budget. Anyone have one that is of good quality and under $250.00. I found a Magnovox MRV640 for $179 at best buy.com that seems pretty good. I read all the reviews and most customer were happy with it. I was just wondering if anyone has experience or knowledge of these devices and could give me an idea of what would be a good safe buy. Thanks.

I also have a question on this very subject. When you convert your VHS tapes into DVD does the picture quality improve, stay the same or diminish?

Also, my mother's DVD player in her computer or the program she is using to watch the movies says that the movie can't be played and that screen resolution needs to be lowered. Well, I've lowered it to its lowest point and still have received the same message, what gives?

I don't know about the brand you are looking at but if customers' reviews say it is OK then it must be.

I bought an Akai DVDRW120 thru Amazon recently but it has been dis-continued. It was also for around $180. I had some problems with mine after a few uses. Sent it in for repair, they ended up giving me a new one and it's worked just fine the last 2 months. I transfered some 20 VHS, DV and made 20-30 DVD copies.

The quality is a bit worse than the orginals. The recorder only does the basic functions: make copies and give u an option to create chapters and that is about it. Nothing fancy.

You have to pay attention to the compatibility issue.

My DVD recorder only makes and plays DVD+R.
    Some others will make DVD-R.

My computer DVD recorder only makes and play DVD-R format.

    Both can play DVD-video (movies).

I have several DVD players. Some play one format, some play the other.

I think you can also get recorders or players that can play all formats too.
