Original 'Star Wars' Trilogy Set for Sept. DVD Release

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Star Wars Trilogy," one of the most-requested DVD episodic film franchises, is expected to be released as a four-disc DVD box set Sept. 21.

A global rollout on DVD is expected within days of the domestic release, according to Lucasfilm Ltd. and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

The trilogy, featuring the classic franchise films "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi," will be released on three DVD discs, with a fourth disc likely to hold a newly made documentary about the "Star Wars" franchise and never-before-seen footage, among several other bonus materials, said Jim Ward, Lucasfilm's vp marketing and distribution and the DVD trilogy's executive producer.

The coolest thing is my 3 year old son wants to know about Chewbacca and Darth Vader. Guess what we're watching tonight over pizza?!!

And with the Raiders films having been released, and Schindler's list out in a month, this is a good time for DVD movie buffs.

Yeah, they're not going to include all those lame computer generated effects that were added on, are they?

    I hope not.

I bet you can turn those on in the menu of the DVD if you choose to. I won't but I bet you will have that option.

I don't think one thread is enough to make that my trademark or anything. ;)

Star Wars rules! They are all bad movies, but they are all still awesome. I will definitely snag that boxset when it comes out.

To be clear, these are the Special Edition versions of the Original Trilogy. IE, musical CGI dance in ROTJ, Luke screaming like a girl in ESB, Greedo shooting first and Han stepping on a tiny Jabba's tail in ANH.

weak! Oh well, special edition Star Wars is better than no Star Wars at all.

I remember recently popping in Star Wars on VHS...Man, the video is so grainy...

    Here's the details:

The DVDs will include the much-debated versions director Lucas released in the '90s with new digital effects and plot twists that softened the character of Han Solo - even though DVD makes it easy to offer both the original and director's cut of a movie.

It's simply a matter of an artist's right, says Jim Ward, a Lucasfilm vice president and the executive producer of the set.

"We realize there's a lot of debate out there," says Ward. "But this is not a democracy. We love our fans, but this is about art and filmmaking. [George] has decided that the sole version he wants available is this one."

IE the only version on the disc. It's aggravating that they don't make both versions available (similar to the Alien disks that were just released).

George Lucas is a facist, left wing pig...

yeah, I don't know what the hell that means, either, but "left wing" seems to be the hip insult going around these days...

Man, I hated that! It looks so cheesy. It reminds me of some of those YoYao gif's from last summer...

It's ironic that special effects from 25 years ago look more realistic than most of todays computer-generated effects. Directors are getting lazy.
