i'd like to ask experts out there with some help.... my dvd+rw/cd-rw drive recently stopped working. when i go to "my computer" the icon is there. i can right click and click "eject" and the tray will open. i put any dvd or cd i own and close the drive and for a few seconds the my arrow cursor even turns into an "arrow with small cd" cursor which indicates it's noticed i put something in. But then the problem... the computer keeps telling me "please insert a disc into drive E:" this is with any disk (cd or dvd) - even ones that work fine on my cd-rom drive F. i've tried everything. turning off the computer... running two virus scans... uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling.... disenabling the drive then reenabling... opening the case and unplugging power/data cables to the back of the drive and then plugging all back in the funny thing is when i put a data cd into the tray the icon on "my computer" changes from "dvd/cd-rw" to "cd drive" so it must be noticing something? any advice would truly be appreciated.... i'd like to avoid getting advice from my brother-in-law (the family computer guy) lest he get one-up on me i have to go out for a few hours and will check replies/suggestions then...
What's the drive? Maker and model? I've had similar problems before with my older cd burner drive. It turned out the old drive was caput. Sounds like yours is dead too. Time for you to go get a new drive. So far my BenQ DVD burner has been great for me.
you either have to clean the disc len with a cleaner, or if that's not working you have to buy a new one.... you may have used you dvd writer too much for burning CD, you should only use dvd writer for dvd burning only, too much CD burning on a dvd writer shorten life of your drive... And get the program DVDInfoPro for the info of your DVD drive.......
If it happens with most or all discs, you'r going to have to junk the drive. Sounds like the laser is capable of reading a little bit of data from the disk (thus, you can see what format the disk is in), but is failiing when trying to read more from the disk. Those things are so damn cheap, it's probably worth your while to just replace it.
