The Boston Red Sox will announce on Thursday that they have fired general manager Dan Duquette, ESPN The Magazine's Tim Kurkjian reported today. Manager Joe Kerrigan will be retained. Mike Port, Lee Thomas and Doug Melvin will all share the Red Sox GM duties. The new owners of the Red Sox are expected to officially take over soon. John Henry, leader of the group that bought the team, has signed final documents for the closing, and hopes the transfer can be completed Wednesday, although it could run over to Thursday. The Henry group has done little to dampen speculation that Duquette will be replaced. Duquette said early in camp that Henry's group praised his offseason acquisitions. But his aloof style is at odds with the new emphasis.
Can't say that I'm surprised by this news. He made too many bad decisions to save his job, even though he did do a good job in getting Damon, Tony Clark, Hermanson, etc. Maybe that clubhouse will FINALLY become stabilized.
If they get Billy Beane from Oak, look out. Beane was great at stockpiling minor league talent via the draft and signing kids from D.R. Bos is desperate for some minor league talent. Varitek might be the last minor leaguer who has done jack crap for Bost. Was Varitek always in the Sox farm system? I know he was drafted by Seattle one year, but I think he ended up not signing with them. Didn't Varitek go to Ga Tech? If so, he might have been teammates with Nomar...
NEvermind... I just read that Varitek was drafted by the Twins in 93, snubbed them, go drafted by the M's, and was traded to the Red Sox in 97. Which leads me to wonder who the last good Red Sox player, other than Nomar, came through the system. Trot Nixon doesn't count, he has fallen short of they ridiculous hype that was given to him.
Man, what are you talking about?? I know Trot was highly regarded coming out of HS and it took him awhile, but the dude had a pretty good damn season last year with like 23-25 HRs and over 80 RBIs. He is definitely considered to be one of the offensive leaders along with Nomar, Ramirez, and Damon. The only question that he has to answer is if he can hit lefties. BTW, Trivia Question- Varitek and Derek Lowe were obtained from Seattle for what player?
Correct...one of the few times that the Red Sox came out ahead on a deal compared to deals like: Sending Sparky Lyle to the Yankees for Danny Cater Sending Jeff Bagwell to the Astros for Larry Andersen and of course sending the Babe to the Yankees so Harry "Crazy" Frazee could keep his precious "No, No Nanette" going.
Harry "Crazy" Frazee? More like Harry "Lucifer" Frazee. And to add insult to injury, it was a Broadway production.
Trot isn't too young anymore. He's gonna be 28 years old, and he hasn't really come close to living up to the hype. He seems to be on the level of a Dmitri Young platoon OF/DH. Not that it proves my point further, but I'm a Red Sox fan, 2nd fave team after the Astros, so at least you can't call me a Red Sox hater, if you ever thought of doing that. Tony Clark will be the X-factor for the offense. If he can provide close to the numbers that Everett put up, the Red Sox can win 95 games.
well 95 wins is stretching it-they will be solid(damon rebounds) but i still think youll deal with the disappointment of no playoffs if i were a betting man id say-ny(obvious) oakland(young pitching is awesome and pena will be very good) chicago(they win a depleted central) seattle as of now(good pitching, solid offense, good chemistry) i just dont see them as a playoff team, sorry
