Doesn't Head have an incredible vertical leap, yet, strangely, I have not seen him dunk the ball a la Steve Francis or D.Wade. I think he needs to start driving and dunking. Not a bad idea for the rest of the team either. I know Ming takes up alot of space in the lane, but I am surprised that our players don't try to take it to the rack more than the do.
It's a long fall for a short guard if he gets hammered. Maybe he's a little leary about it playing around all these NBA giants.
Heck, if Tracy can't do it, Head won't, hahaha. I think it has to do with the defense really collapsing down, and not really giving him much of an opportunity to throw it down. I don't know...I really hope to see him flush a few soon though. I see him sky for boards.
Whenever Luther has driven this year, the defense has collapsed in. He's not that big a guy, and I don't think he'd have much success dunking. What he needs is a Tony Parker style tear drop runner. Then he could easily score off penetration.
There are players who can dunk in open court, and there are players who can dunk in traffic. The real dunkers in the NBA are those who can do it in traffic. It's not just how high you can jump, but also your upper body strength and determination to finish strong. Head simply doesn't have the power and strength to do it like Wade. If you are talking about vertical leaps, DeShawn Stevenson of Orlando has one of the best verticals in the league, yet he's hardly able to dunk the ball in the context of a game. Head might be able to participate in the Dunk Contest, but I even doubt that's gonna happen.
You can't expect a smaller player to get a lot of dunks in a half court ball contol offense where the D can play zone. The Rox will need to play more of a transition game to open things up. The Rox started doing that a lot more in the second half of last season so maybe JVG will relax again and open things up. Then you will probably see Head getting some highlight reel dunks.
I personally could give a dang about him driving inside when he shoots nearly 50% from threes. He probably has a better chance of making that sweet jumper of his than making a layup
I would rather see LH develop a game like Tony Parker or Manu, either make those crazy carom shots Parker makes on his dribble penetration or dunk it like Manu does. Perimeter shooters are just too streaky for me. I was wondering the same thing though after hearing Luther had a 38" vertical, where was his power dunk.
I saw Luther Head try to dunk it at open practice, on an alley-oop. He missed. I think someone tried another alley-oop during one of the games, but it was off target. He can fly, but his hands might be too small. I think he's getting a little better at driving more and finishing inside.
I saw Luther do a reverse jam over his head in the summer league and on breakaways. I don't see him doing much of that in the NBA. But then I'm pleased to see him popping 3's as well as he is. FYI : He's got a 38-39 inch vertical; same as Stro and Amare. Steve's was 42-43 inches.
Rudy's coaching ability post-Hakeem is fair game for discussion. But bringing up the mans' personal life is more than irresponsible. IMHO, it is totally classless. We all have our demons. A man who has historically and with class contributed so much to the Rockets and the city of Houston deserves better than this crude thoughtless comment. Shame on you.
i agree. why make things difficult when you have the talent to score a "3" where the risk of bodily harm is low
