IMHO Tim Duncan will either stick with SA or force a sign and trade deal with another team. Reasons he will stay with SA 1. they will defend their title this year 2. he genuinely loves the city (loyalty) 3. he doesn't like the alternative teams Reasons he will ditch the Spurs 1. getting too old 2. lack of depth to remain a contender after this year 3. boring low-post kick-out to a brick/airball attempt If he ever leaves SA, I have a gut feeling Houston would be his first option. Here are the reasons 1. Young Talent Time!- the ROCKS have the backcourt that would complement his low-post play seamlessly 2. the ROCKS are younger, more exciting and seemed destined for greatness 3. RUDY T is the best low-profile coach in the history of the NBA 4. money matters but not to the extent that Orlando and Chicago will throw at him 5. Orlando is a flash in a pan! 6. Chicago has already got a PF 7. Houston is where the HEART OF A CHAMPION BEATS To make it work and agreeable with SA, I'd imagine the ROCKS will have to send Cato, the $4.5 mil, Drew, the 1st Rd Pick and 2 future 1st Rd Picks. I have a gut feeling they would also want The Cat but I hope it would not come to that. ------------------ HAKEEM WAS THE DREAM FRANCIS IS THE CREAM
It's certainly possible Rock, but I still think its highly unlikely. The deal you propose is too much. Duncan's max salary is $9Mil next year, so Cato ($5mil) + Trade Credit ($4.5 mil) + drew ($1.2mil) won't go. Also, If I'm San Antonio I'm not going to be happy getting first round picks as part of the deal. Whichever team gets Duncan is going to have some late first round picks for the next few years. PS. Nice reference to Young Talent Time - if it wasn't for your nickname I would have guessed you were an Aussie straight away. ------------------ http://rocketdavo.tripod.com
Davo, I'm not sure if I'm reading you correctly, but if you're saying Cato+4.5+Drew does not match $9m, that is not really correct. The trade exception can be split-up any way we see fit. It is not $4.5m or nothing. We can also spread it across several trades. DISCLAIMER: This post is in no way advocating the possibility of signing Duncan. Please, no stone throwing.
aelliott, I think you looked at the scenario too fast. In Davo's scenario above, we are getting the higher salary. $9m > Cato (5.33) + Drew (1.2) Even in the Rocks scenario using draft picks, they count $0 towards trades until signed. (That's how we got a lot of this exception to begin with, Francis counted $0 in our trade.) Even if we sign our pick before the trade, that only adds roughly $1.2m for an 11th pick. Bottom line: all the scenarios in this thread have more salary flowing to the Rockets than out.
so what if what we propose is too much? i think san antonio can throw in a scrub or something like that right? and to make the trade work, i think san antonio would want KT in there, so they get a young good pf in return. realistically speaking, i doubt san antonio woudl want to do that, they'll want mobely in there, but i REALLY DONT want mobley to go. maybe if duncan tells sa he wants to leave no matter what, then rocks will get a little more trade leverage. ------------------ you are to be praised by gods and revered as women.
Well Duncan is out indefinitely now. Check it out. Duncan Has Knee Injury ------------------ The lottery sucks!

get out of here you crooks. j/k. Smeg, have you ever seen Welcome to Woop Woop? It's really funny. Oh, and (bball) I guess Duncan will be cheaper now.
Sorry heypartner, I stand corrected. We could split the $4.5mil, but as stated by Rock of Oz it was too much. Please apply the same disclaimer as hp's ------------------ http://rocketdavo.tripod.com
They gave him a good enough supporting cast to get him a championship already. They will pay him the max. He loves the city. Add it up. He's staying. End of story. Forget about him.
heypartner, I belive that the trade exception only allows you to receive additional salary in a trade (not give away additional salary). In the above scenario, SA would be getting the higher aggregate salaries, not the Rockets. The Rockets trade exception doesn't come into play under those circumstances. Anyway,it's a small point because you could obviously have SA throw in some additional salary to even things out. I too don't think that there's any chance that Duncan winds up in Houston. ------------------
Maybe you're right but I think there is a chance he will go. B/c SA has been pursuing his signature on a new contract earlier this year, and yet Duncan said he will consider his options at the end of the year. And we all know about the track record of Rudy T and CD when it comes to pulling blockbuster trades. If God was a free-agent, I'd bet my money on Rudy T and CD signing him. Besides, it might even be a 3-way trade with Seattle and their under-performing All-Star, Vin Baker. Who knows? ------------------ HAKEEM WAS THE DREAM FRANCIS IS THE CREAM
Hi my name is Timmy Duncan and my plans are as follows: 1 Tell the damn Spurs to trade me to the Rockets for Drew and a second rounder. 2 Convince my best friend Grant Hill to join me in Rocketland. 3 Mess with the lottery balls in the NBA draft so that Rockets can get Kenyon. 4 Win a dozen championships with Steve, Shandon, Mobley, Hill, and Kenyon. Any questions? ------------------
C'mon, Drew and Cato for the second-best player in the league? I think SA would rather have Duncan sign with just about any other team in the league over Houston, so they are not going to do Htown any favor in signing him. Anyway, I still don't see why TD would pick Orlando over Houston. You want a young team playing with heart and a good coach, look at them. Don't forget all their picks either. We'll still kick a## without TD anyway. Still would LOVE to have him though. ------------------
