Jose Tristan's car struts its stuff in last year's parade.
The menacing dragons and flames painted atop Jose Tristan's 2000 tangerine Honda Civic's hood weren't enough to scare off thieves who stripped, then torched the award-winning car.

Tristan's charred car, which he spent three years and about $30,000 on, was found abandoned early Tuesday morning on an isolated dirt road in Shepherd, in San Jacinto County north of Houston.

The 47-year-old Houston resident said nothing is left to salvage of last year's Art Car Parade winner for best paint job.

"It's just black," Tristan said of the uninsured car. "Everything is melted, and I see that they stole everything out of it. It's missing the body kit, the trunk, the hood, the speakers and the amps. All the interior is burned."

The car was stored inside a trailer parked at the Latin Image Lowrider Club of Houston's shop in northeast Harris County.

Tristan, a 10-year member of the club, said the car and trailer were taken late Sunday from the shop.

The trailer and a turntable used to display the car — which together cost almost $10,000 — are also total losses, Tristan said.

He said he didn't bother to insure the car because it was never driven on Houston streets.

Authorities are investigating the case, but no one has been nabbed, Tristan said.

"I'm gonna have to start on another one," he said. "This one here is not worth fixing — it's completely dead."

Tristan, who owns another lowrider car and truck, said he intends to remain in this year's Art Car Parade.

He said he and other members of the car club will concentrate on completing his 1989 Ford Escort for this year's parade May 14.

The club will likely organize a fund-raiser to try to help complete the project.

"That car was a real treasure car for us," said Kim Stoilis, artistic director of Everyones Art Car Parade.

Stoilis said parade organizers would be willing to pitch in for the fund-raiser.

"It feels pretty bad, but there's nothing I can do about it," Tristan said. "I don't have nothing left of it, and now I'll do something else, something new."

That's what you get for dumping thirty thousand into a Civic.

All joking aside, I feel bad for the guy. It sucks to have something that you have put so much time and hard work into taken and destroyed.

My thoughts EXACTLY! What kind of wacko do you have to be to put that much into a $15K car? I'm guessing the guy is single...no wife would allow that kind of behavior.

Security must suck at "Latin Image." Maybe it was an inside job.

what is being overlooked here is that they are working on doing the same thing to a freaking 1989 Ford ESCORT

    HELLO???

What did that car cost off the factory floor?....9k?

and on top of that it is one ugly little car...my old 72 Gremlin looked better than a Escort...

hey guys...newsflash.....try modding up a car that is actually worth it. geez...

managed to cobble together a nice sound system that was probably worth as much as the blue book on it...;)

But you gotta admit...it wasnt the prettiest car on the block....not by a long shot..

I don't know, I always liked the Gremlin and Pacer when I was a kid. I always thought they looked good.

Then again, I bought a used Merkur XR4TI. That memory just gave me a heart palpitation.

He can always go on "Pimp My Ride" if the car club can't help enough.

Why not spend some of that 30k and get a better car in the first place?

Exactly, take the 15k from the car and the 30k for the mods and get a nice car for 40k, and as a bonus you get to pocket the 5k extra. Now you have a nice BMW and 5k instead of a rediculous tangerine civic that you riced out but never drive around.
