Cruise passenger saved after 17 hours in Gulf

GALVESTON -- A Michigan man fell off a Carnival cruise ship and managed to stay afloat until a passing cargo vessel rescued him about 17 hours later, the Coast Guard confirmed Thursday.

Tim Sears, 31, of Lansing, Mich., was plucked from the Gulf of Mexico about 50 miles offshore. He had fallen from the Galveston-based cruise ship Celebration around midnight Saturday.

Sears told the Port Arthur News in a story published this week that he did not remember falling from the ship.

"I really don't know what happened," Sears said. "The boat left Galveston about 4:30 Saturday afternoon and the last thing I remember was me and my buddy talking to some girls in the casino around midnight.

"The next thing I knew I woke up in the water."

"It was my first cruise, and it will probably be my last," Sears told the Port Arthur newspaper.

"According to his cabinmate, he was last seen in one of the ship's bars in the very early hours of the morning of the 13th," de la Cruz said. "At some point thereafter, he apparently went overboard. He treaded water all day and was picked up by the cargo ship at approximately 5:30 the same day."

I read that earlier. He basically blacked out from a night of drinking. That is one lucky bastid. He should have been shark food. I wonder if he supplemented his drinking with anything else.
But, he may have also been drunk, went to sleep, and sleepwalked overboard.

If your a drunkard who blacks out a lot or sleep walks, then a cruise might not be for you!

This is what I don't understand. I have been on a cruise ship before and in fact, I have been on the same ship this guy was (Celebration). The whole ship, with the exception of a few spots, has double railing. So its impossible to, without alot of effort, to get to the outer rail and fall into the water.

He probably didn't disclose the real reason he fell overboard. He was trying to duplicate that seen from Titantic where Rose was leaning over the railing threatening to jump. He was Jack trying to come to her rescue. What a sap!

How does one stay afloat that long without a preserver anyways? When I get in the ocean without a wetsuit, I sink like a rock.

If you are wearing denim pants you can take them off, tie the ends of the legs and slap the water at the waistband untill the pants fill with air. Place each leg under your armpits and you can safely float virtually forever....untill you get eaten or die of hunger first that is.

If you are knocked out, does that help you float or do you sink?

and how long do you think someone could tread water if they had to?

It seems like this guy was lucky he was in a shipping path. And lucky that someone would even find him.

You can only survive without water for about 3-7 days. Without food for 30 days. He just got damn lucky.

I saw another article that said he "had a few drinks, but not enough to make him fall off the boat". REALLY?!? It also said he is fine "except for bad sores on his underarms and crotch":eek:That's not good, man...

Oh come on now....who here hasn't gotten totally blitzed on a cruise, fallen overboard unconscious, woken up in the ocean, and been rescued a day or so later? Honestly...people in glass houses...
