I guarantee that if someone proposed the same for members of the legislature there would be at least one member who came out as incredibly offended at the idea.

Honest, upright elected officials are beyond reproach. But you can't trust those shiftless, unemployed lazy people. They're all probably doing drugs.

In addition to everything else, this is about framing the unemployed and people on welfare as lazy, no good junkies.

Sorry, but you are the person confused, with all due respect. You seem to think that everyone should be as educated and as smart as you. That everyone in these circumstances would know about this requirement. That someone who had had a few beers at a friend's house and smoked a joint in a social setting would have something like that at the forefront of their thoughts. Smoking a joint wouldn't have had a physical or mental impact on the next day's job search, not any worth mentioning, but more than those few beers would have, yet those beers are legal. Those beers are legal, and members of the Lege drink beer, drink wine, drink much harder stuff all the time. Large numbers of them do. And some smoke pot. Yet in their hypocrisy, they have no problem ****ting all over those less fortunate than they are. In fact, some of the members delight in doing so, and then will hit the bars after the vote.

Is it too much to ask that people who want unemployment benefits know the requirements to qualify for unemployment benefits?

    That's elementary-school level common sense....

Apparently, the State of Florida in involved in a case where drug testing for benefits may be an unconstitutional 4th Amendment violation.

I think government should have less power over its people in this country, not more. This is a fundamental intrusion on their right of privacy. It's government sticking its nose into the affairs of people outside the workplace, digging into their personal lives. And it is none of their damned business.

They paid into it, it's already somewhat restricted to get back in the first place. I don't like this that much.

It says they will only test those applicants whose questionnaires are flagged as suspect.

I see it this way. People who lose their jobs due to drug use/abuse currently do not qualify for unemployment benefits.

Sometimes people who are using drugs (alcohol is drug period) lose their job for some reason that is associated to drug use (poor work performance/work injury/etc.) but are not fired directly for drug use. When they file for unemployment and fill out the questionnaire it is to help find those workers who if they had been tested at work would be unqualified for benefits normally.

From the perspective of a person who is using and loses their job for drug related reason that doesn't immediately unqualified them for the benefits; I think it should scare them enough that they would immediately try to clean up and seek help, especially if they are going to have to find a new job which will most likely drug screen them. The reason for the benefits is to help the individual during their new search for work, not just so they don't have to look for a new job and keep using.

And they fact that they will only test those who are flagged, which should only be small percentage, should not be a cost problem.

They need to drug test politicians -- especially mayors.

    Is it?

Or is it saying that if you are going to be living off of other people's hard work, here are the requirements.

They aren't. Its called unemployment insurance. Everyone pays into it and if you happen to get laid off you get some benefits. Just like health insurance or life insurance. It isn't food stamps.

But... but... but clearly the real issue is not the destruction of our food supply by Monsanto or the ever increasing police state we live in... It is some lazy, shiftless minority buying crack with OUR money. Seriously, that is what the unemployed shiftless unproductive poor people in this country do, buy IPOD's, steal from the government and host large scale BBQ's where middle class girls lose their virginity..... Didn't you get the memo?

If you want less government intervention, there's a simple solution. Don't apply. If you don't accept their free money, they won't be in the position to have more power over you.

However, there is room for compromise. Unemployment benefits were originally intended to last 26 weeks, right? In that case, I see nothing wrong with the government giving drug tests to people who apply for unemployment benefits beyond 26 weeks.

Drug-using unemployment tax recipients sounds like the latest bogeyman from republicans... like the welfare recipient driving up in their Cadillac to collect foodstamps, this GOP invention further demonstrates the depth that republicans will go to protect the wealthy and further their extremist views.

A white male in his 20's pretending to be an older black woman would set off red flags.

Well people who live in Texas. I'm sorry that your money is going to be wasted on this. I'd think people would want less govt. spending not more. What a shame.

So what is wrong with making sure that folks are in compliance and in good legal standing?

If you want to live off the government and all of us taxpayers, then here are the requirements.

Seems like a sound plan to me.

Also, like the testing requirements for politicians and government workers - should be annual.
